B.A. in Communication Studies

The Division of Humanities and Fine Arts prides itself in educating students for life. Designed to enhance personal and professional growth, the course work offered by the Division support a life of intellectual exploration, integrated learning, and personal development.

The program of study for Communication begins with introductory courses that provide an overview of the discipline and allow one to learn where their focused interested reside. Students take a series of required classes designed to develop both oral and written communication skills, as well as understand research methods and the theories that provide a foundation for effective communication. Students round out their degree by selecting an area of interest and taking courses that develop more focused and advanced skills.The program of study prepares students for graduate study or a variety of careers in Communication related fields. Students work closely with their advisors to select appropriate courses and electives to meet individual education and career goals.

Program Requirements

This degree completion program is designed for students who have completed at least 60 semester hours of transferable college credit with a GPA of 2.0 or better, and individuals who have completed an associate degree at the community college level. Prior transcripts are evaluated to determine academic status in relation to satisfying degree program requirements, including both general education courses equivalent to Indiana University East core curriculum and all prerequisites for upper division, junior- and senior-level work.

A total of 42 major requirement credits are required to complete the program. Fulltime students may complete the program in 3 semesters, if they commit to a load of 12 -15 credits each The number of courses you will need to complete your degree will depend primarily on how many earlier credits transfer. Students who have already completed the appropriate general education and distribution requirements may complete their Communication course work online with minimal on-campus attendance. The degree fulfilling communication classes are being offered on three semester rotation.

While the program is designed for students already having an associates degree or who have completed at least two years of college, many general education courses are also available online. Students should meet with a communication advisor to determine when is the right time to enroll in the online program and to develop a program of study.

Students will also have to complete the Foreign Language requirement if they have not previously done so.

If you are a prospective student, you must first apply for admission and be accepted by IU East before registering for classes. This program follows the general admission requirements and procedures. Students who are not seeking degrees from IU East, may register for classes as non-degree students.
