APPLYING FOR STUDENT TEACHING

FAQ:  When do I apply?

The student teaching/practicum application process occurs each fall semester for all candidates expecting to student teach or complete a practicum in the next academic year.  For example, the fall 2006 application process is for candidates planning to student teach during the fall 2007 or spring 2008 semesters.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO STUDENT TEACHING

Elementary and Secondary Programs:

  • Senior standing (86 hours or more)
  • All methods courses completed with a grade of C+ or higher and a 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Satisfactory grade in all lab/field experiences.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • PRAXIS I (PPST) taken at the time of admission to the teacher education program and successfully achieving scores at or above the state cut-off:  Reading 176/323, Writing 172/318, Math 175/320
  • Admission to Student Teaching portfolio meets all requirements
  • Student Teaching application meeting with Director of Field Experiences
  • Student teaching application submitted to Director of Field Experiences by Dec. 1 (for a student teaching placement in the following academic year)

Elementary Program:

  • GPA of 2.5 or higher in each subject area: 

Humanities, Sciences, Math, Social Studies, General Education

Secondary Program:

  • GPA of 2.5 or higher in content area.
  • grade of C or higher in all major area courses.
  • 75% of major must be completed

 


INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR STUDENT TEACHING or PRACTICUM
FALL 2008 OR SPRING 2009

1.  Student Teaching application meeting:            

All student teaching/practicum candidates must attend an application meeting with the Director of Field Experiences during the weeks immediately following early registration (usually the first two weeks in November).  Sign up for an appointment on the schedule posted on the office door of the Director of Field Experiences, Middlefork #342.  This meeting will include detailed information for the completion of the student teaching application. 

 

2.  Application for Student Teaching or Practicum:  There are 2 parts to the written application.

  • Part I is an information form.  This form is available as a PDF document by clicking here. 
  • Part II consists of 5 questions requiring essay responses.  These questions are included with Part I of the application form.  Details for the completion of Part II will be given during the student teaching application meeting.
  •  Completed Student Teaching Applications are submitted to Judy Maurer, Director of Field Experiences, Middlefork 342, (765) 973-8533, jumaurer@indiana.edu.  Directions for how to submit completed applications will be given during the student teaching application meeting.
