Degree Programs
The Department of the Communication Studies offers the following degree programs:
- Online Bachelor of Arts Degree Completion Program in Communication
- Bachelor of Arts in Communication
- Minor in Communication Studies
Bachelor of Arts in Communication
General Requirements
- You must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, of which 100 must be in arts and sciences.
- You must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C) on 4.0 scale. A course taken to fulfill requirements of the major must be completed with a grade of C or better, and the grade point average for all courses in the degree must be C (2.0) or better.
- A minimum of 36 credit hours must be in courses at the 300 and 400 levels.
- You must complete a minimum of 24 credits at Indiana University East, and at least 15 credits in the major must be completed at Indiana University East.

- W131 Elementary Composition I (3)
- W231 Professional Writing (3)
- S121 Public Speaking (3)
- Mathematics: One course in mathematics at the 100 level or higher (3)
- CSCI A110 Introduction to Computers and Computing (3)
Distribution Requirements (36 cr. hr.)
Select courses in each category from two disciplines:- Humanities and Fine Arts (12 credit hours)
- Behavorial and Social Sciences (12 credit hours )
- Natural sciences and mathematics (12 credit hours, including one course with a lab)
Foreign Language Requirements (0-12 cr. hr.)
The Foreign language requirement can be met in one of the following ways:
- Four courses in sequence in a single foreign language.
- Three courses in foreign languagae (at least two in sequence in one foreign language) and one foreign language culture course taught in English.
- Two courses in sequence in a foreign language and two courses in sequence in a second foreign language.
- Two courses in sequence in one foreign language and two foreign language culture courses taught in English.
Concentration Requirements (36 cr. hr.)
You must complete a total of 36 credit hours in communication, of which 15 credit hours must be the 300-400 level. Requirements include:
- W132 English Composition II (3) or W231 Professional Writing (3)
- S205 Introduction to Communication
- S303 Propaganda and Persuasion
- W395 Junior Writing Seminar
- S400 Senior Seminar
- S490 Internship in Communication
Concentration Areas (18 cr. hr.)
You select an area of specialization within your major. An additional 18 credits must be completed from the approved course list, available from the major advisor.
