The following surveys will assess how successful you may be at a distance education course.

Please provide a single answer for each of the questions and submit your score at the bottom of the survey.

ABOUT THE STUDENT:

1. My need to take a distance learning course is:
a. High - I need it for graduation, my major, or my job.
b. Moderate - I could take it later, on cmapus, or substitute another course.
c. Low - it's for personal interest; I can take it anytime.

 

2. My comfort level with computer is:

a. High - I enjoy using computers and do so frequently.
b. Moderate - I use computer only when necessary.
c. Low - I am uncomfortable using computers and avoid doing so whenever possible.

 

3. I usually access the internet:

a. at home.
b. at work.
c. at school.

 

4. I use email :

a. frequently, with a high degree of comfort.
b. occasionally, but have trouble with some features of my e-mail account.
c. seldom or never.

 

5. I use word processing software:

a. frequently, and am quite comfortable with it.
b. occasionally, and am reasonably comfortable with it.
c. seldom, and am not very comfortable with it.

 

6. I use the internet:

a. frequently ( more than five times a week).
b. occasionally ( more than once a week).
c. seldom or never.

 

7. As a web user, I would classify myself as:

a. proficient, I can navigate through the WWW, use search engines, and perform assorted e-mail and word-processing tasks.
b. adequate, I have a basic understanding of and have used the Internet, and have a basic understanding of e-mail and word-processing software..
c. inexperienced, I am not familiar with the World Wide Web..

 

8. As a reader, I would consider myself:

a. good, I can read and understand text material without help.
b. average, I sometimes need help in understanding material presented in text form.
c. poor, I have difficulty learning by reading. I learn best by listening.

 

9. Considering my professional and personal schedule, the amount of time I have to work on an online course is:

a. more than would be needed for a traditional course on campus.
b. about the same as would be needed for an on-campus course.
c. less than would be needed for an on-campus course.

 

10. As a writer, I would classify myself as:

a. good, I can express myself and communicate effectively in writing
b. average, I can communicate in writing, but with some effort.
c. poor, I have difficulty putting my thoughts in writing.

 

11. How would you characterize your time-management skills?

a. I manage my time well and almost always turn in assignments on time. I rarely procrastinate.
b. I manage my time adequately, but sometimes miss deadlines due to procrastination.
c. Sign me up for procrastinator's anonymous!.

 

12. Which best describes your work habits?

a. I like to work independently. I'm a self-starter and take the initiative to complete coursework.
b. I can work on my own, but occasionally I need external motivation from a mentor or peer to get my work done..
c. I have difficulty working on my own without consistent motivation.

 

13. Face-to-face contact with instructors and peers is:

a. not very important to me.
b. nice, but not essential for me.
c. very important to me.

 

14. Communicating with others via electronic interactions such as discussion forums and chat rooms is:

a. something I enjoy and am very comfortable with.
b. not intimidating to me, though it is not a favorite mode of communication for me.
c. something I'm uncomfortable with.

 

15. I can easily and conveniently get to campus and its facilities:

a. most anytime.
b. evenings or Saturdays, if I schedule it carefully.
c. almost never: I would have great difficulty getting to campus at anytime.
