Academic Advising

Planning Your Next Term

How to Prepare for your Future Advising Appointments

  • Prepare a list of questions or comments about course options, academic problems and concerns, decisions about upcoming semester, and other issues about your major or minor.
  • Review degree requirements and track your progress towards graduation.
  • Review schedule of classes for the future semester and make a list of potential courses you may be interested in.

Common Holds

  • Advising Hold: Advising holds are placed on all student accounts, which will prohibit students from registering for classes until they have an advising appointment every semester.
  • US Status Verification Hold: Instructions for resolving this hold can be found in the link provided below. Be sure to click the “verify” box at the end of the process.

Important Dates & Deadlines

Information about important dates and deadlines is available here: Academic Calendar

Withdrawing from a Course

If you are considering dropping a course, please speak with your advisor and Financial Aid FIRST! There might be other options besides withdrawing. Remember, also, that withdrawing from a course can have Financial Aid implications.

Additionally, please refer to the list of Important Dates and Deadlines for refund periods, as well as the final date to withdraw from a course in order to receive an automatic “W”.

Viewing Your Unofficial Transcript

Prior to your advising appointment, take a moment to review your unofficial transcript to ensure that all transfer credits have posted to your account. You can get a copy of your unofficial transcript using the “Unofficial Transcript” app in One.IU (one.iu.edu).

Degree Maps and iGPS

Indiana University has developed a robust set of academic planning tools, iGPS, to assist students in course selection and registration. Degree Maps are designed to help students understand which classes to take each semester. To access your Degree Map login to one.iu.edu and search Degree Maps. Select the IU East campus and your academic school. Your academic advisor can assist you in adding your map to your Planner and using the iGPS system for academic planning.
