Program/Service Notes:
The mission is to provide trained teens to serve as role models, aid with decision making, assist with clear communication skills, make appropriate referrals to adults or agencies, present prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs workshops, and provide conflict mediation services to same age and younger peers throughout the Richmond Community Schools System. Service objectives: Prevention education workshops, peer helper training classes, Individual help with decision making, information, or referrals; Regular, special education and limited-english speaking intensive reading and intensive math; Study buddy tutoring and mentoring; Protecting you, protecting me curriculum; new student orientation and conflict mediations. Volunteer Opportunities: Persons over 21 who will volunteer to drive and accompany peer helpers to classrooms for prevention workshops, tutoring and activities. Commitment requirement includes the same RHS class hour on Monday and any other day or days of the week. Rehearsals are held on Mondays and presentations on the other days of the week. The volunteer needs to bond with and work with the same group of peer helpers for a trimester. Skills needed: Orientation and on-site training. Need maturity and good observation skills, the ability to gracefully divert a disruptive student to another location or to helpful participation, the ability to add comments which regain focus, the ability to record service data(i.e., numbers, genders).
