Administers a special supplemental food and nutrition program funded by the USDA, designed to promote better health. WIC participants receive food vouchers for nutritious foods, which can be redeemed at designated grocery stores; receive nutrition education, nutrition counseling, and information about other health and social services. Applicants who receive Medicaid, food stamps, or TANF are income eligible for WIC. WIC is available to pregnant women, breast feeding mother (up to one year after delivery), postpartum, non-breast feeding mothers (up to six months after delivery), infants, and children under the age of five. To participate in the WIC program, applicants must live within a WIC service area, have a nutritional need, and meet current income guidelines. The foods provided to the women and children on the WIC Program are milk/cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, and dried beans/peas/peanut butter. Breastfeeding Women receive tuna and carrots in addition to the basic food package. Infants are provided iron-fortified formula, infant cereal, and juice.
