The Future of Tutorial Services

11/18/2009

The following is an email I sent to a lot of my classmates early this morning.

Please attend Chat with Chancellor

Please read this…

Hello, I am Jerry Richwine, I am writing every one of my past and current classes because a change is happening on campus. I feel as students we should know what this change is.

How many of you have used any program offered by Tutorial Services (math lab, S.I. Leaders, writing lab, tutors, etc…)? I have! I am also employed by them as an SI Leader. As you know Tutorial Services is a separate part of the University as its own Department. The Chancellor announced Friday that it is no longer centralized. The details that I know concerning this are as follows:

  • The program is going to be split into control of the departments themselves. i.e. Math Lab will be relocated and administered by the Math Department. Writing & Reading Lab to English…
  • S.I. Program to ???
  • The reason given for this is “economic savings”.

I have many questions and concerns for this. Mainly, why? How does this affect me, and how is this going to affect you as students. I cherish this Department. If it wasn’t for tutorial services, I’d still be a below average math student, would not have been able to help other students with Biology, and assist aspiring nurses to move further into the Nursing Program. I want to know whether this is going to be a change for the better of the students, rather than economic reasons. I also want to know why short notice and why this is going to take place over winter break within a 3-4 week time period instead of summer? To me this is going to confuse the new students we are trying to retain.  These few concerns are only the beginning of many.

I encourage you to attend the Chat with Chancellor Today Wed Nov 18th, at 5pm in the Graf center.

If you ever attend a Chat with him, please let it be this one! Get involved with your campus life. Let your Voice Be Heard!

Whether you have enjoyed this program or not please come and show your concerns, support, and thoughts.

Thank you
Jerry
