::Sweet September::

ummm if I am not mistaken this is like the fifth or sixth week of school, where has the time gone??? I have already had {{3}} exams <----CRAZY! Not to mention about a **Zillion** papers......ok...maybe not that many, but def. to many for my liking!

September was exciting, and jammed pack!

First, I started my clinical rotations in Psych and Medsurg. My psych rotation was very interesting to say the least. I was beyond nervous but it ended up being a very eye opening experience and it was a good way to work on my communication skills. I had my medsurg  clinical at Arbor Trace nursing home. If you have never been into a nursing home it is an experience within its self. Arbor Trace is one of the nicest nursing homes I have ever been in, but sometime no matter how appealing the place it is still sad to see all the people, who would want nothing more than to have a conversation with someone and have someone listen to their stories.

I enjoyed getting to know my patient and it felt good to know that even though I was only there two days I still made a little bit of a difference in her day. This week I have to administer medication for the first time to a "real" person Lol (we practice on dummies in the nursing lab). So I already know that a dummie and a person are nothing alike Lol....I am beyond nervous and I am at that point where you think you know how to do something but then when you get ready to do it...its like uhhhhhhhh......idk?? Hopefully I get over this before I have to do it :/!

Other than school, track workouts are still in full effect and the volleyball team has still been going full force towards a conference title! So that bring me to my wonderful friend and fellow nursing student Cari Dew! Cari and I have been in the nursing program for a year now...we have suffered, celebrated, contemplated quiting together Lol. But we have made it thus far, and I wouldn't have been able to do it with out her help <-----------I know that was extremely nice hahaha! Anyways Cari and I made posters for the Volleyball game and I must say that we probably should have considered Art as a major.

It was also my BEAUTIFUL sisters 19 birthday!! Which makes me feel kinda old. I have to  say that i might just be the best sister ever because I surprised her at work with an amazing gift!! She loved it but said I wasn't her favorite sister......(she is my only sister Lol :@). But I love her anyways :) !

BTW can i mention how wonderful this fall weather is????? #loveit BOOTS:SCARVES:COATS!!!!!!!

ps: Have a good school week, and does anybody know how many days until Christmas?? ;)

Blogger Newbie

Hello all IUE bloggers and readers! Hope school is getting off to a good start for everyone. Junior year of nursing school is off to a bang, and it seems like everyday I have a to-do list that never gets any shorter. :( Between it and work at Lowe's, free time is just a memory at this point LOL! but like they say it will all be worth it in the end. I'm still getting used to how to work this site and I'm going to try to get some pictures uploaded later tonight after work. Hope everyone's Monday is going well!

busy bee

Hello all! How is school going? I am sure you are all super busy, as am I. With classes, 2 jobs, and trying to have a life - it does get a bit hectic. But are you ever so busy that when you have free time it seems weird? Because that happens to me lol. This past week I added "dog-sitter" to my busy schedule. My boyfriend Travis lives with 5 guys and 1 of them decided to get a dog for them to share. Everyone meet ROME!

ROME

He is rotten to the core but oh so sweet :) While I was puppy sitting I introduced him to my cousins puppy Magnus and my dog Jaydee. Basically Magnus couldn't keep up with his energy and Jaydee hated him! Jaydee is older now so he doesn't really like new friends.

MAGNUS & JAYDEE

In other news. I started working at an apple orchard (not including the other 2 jobs) and I love it so much. They sell honeycrisp apples and they just happen to be the best apples in the entire world. On average I eat about 5 a day. :) just saying lol.

I really do miss being on campus I've decided. I have one class that I drive to campus for on Friday and I LOVE that the trees are changing colors. That is one of my favorite things about campus in the fall. When you walk across the bridge from TR parking lot to Hayes and see all of the tress, you cant help but to smile :) or that might just be me.  Anyway I hope you all have a great week and you will hear from me the end of this week!!

The Canterbury Chronicles

Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral!

I’m here! I am now living in Canterbury, England and I couldn’t be happier. I have been somewhat hesitant about starting this blog because my life has been turned upside down and I really don’t know where to start! I left last Friday and first flew to Boston. The five of us from IU who flew together got to the Boston airport at around 8 pm and nothing was open! We were all so hungry and thirsty but every restaurant in the airport was closed and existed only to tempt us that night. From there, we flew to London Heathrow. The flight to London was six hours, but it seemed to last about 12. And let me just throw this out there- it is IMPOSSIBLE to sleep on an airplane comfortably. The flight was miserable, I was tired and hungry and all I wanted to do was find my bed on my new campus and sleep. Instead, the other students and I had to take a two hour bus ride to campus where we then had to carry our bags around until we found our accommodation. At that point, I was over it. I had been up for 36 hours, I hadn’t eaten and I was sweaty and feeling awful. Looking back, my arrival in England was anything but storybook. I was too miserable to notice the intense green scenery or the fact that our bus was driving on the opposite side of the road. That night, after settling in, I became extremely homesick and pessimistic about my new life here. But, I mean, who wouldn’t after the awful day I had? I woke up the next morning and vowed to have a better day. I went downstairs (I live in a 6-bedroom house on campus with five other people, but I'll get to that later) and one of my English roommates, Jonny, made me a proper English breakfast that consisted of eggs, bacon and hot tea. It made me feel so much better, especially since the tea he made me tasted identical to the tea my mother would make me when I was feeling sick. In England, the bacon they use is what we in America call Canadian bacon, so it is basically ham. Therefore, when Jonny was making my breakfast, instead of using the fat from the bacon to fry the eggs, he poured a lot of oil in the pan and put both the bacon and eggs in to cook. What you end up getting is a delicious, fatty, protein packed breakfast that would make any American happy and full. That day was then spent getting to know my roommates and campus. I live in a section of campus called Park Wood that consists of 5 and 6-bedroom houses in very close proximity. I live in Denstead Court with Jonny who is from England, Lauren who is also from England, Damien who is from Switzerland, Hulian who is a girl from China and Jason who is also from China. I have been blessed with the most wonderful, nice and respectful roommates. I couldn’t be happier with people I live with. I also couldn’t be happier with Kent’s campus. Everything is beautiful and easy to find. Everyone here is extremely nice and welcoming and it reminds me a lot of IUE.  :)

This first week at Kent is known as Fresher’s Week where there are events everyday and themed parties to go to every night. This is the week before classes start where everyone goes out and has a blast, but me and my American friends from IU who I have become extremely close with, are finding it very difficult to keep up with these Brits! Instead of going out last night, my friend Christina and I made pasta (well SHE made the pasta, I just cleaned the kitchen-ha!) for our friend Nick who brought the wine and dessert. We were very boring last night but the tasty meal and rest were needed. Speaking of delicious meals, on Tuesday night all of the international students were welcomed with an International Dinner. It was the first proper meal my friends and I had had in a few days and it was amazing! We had wine, bread, salad, chicken with stuffing and potatoes, cheesecake with berries and coffee or tea with mints. Our servers wore white gloves and came and took our plates after each course; it was fancy. ;)  I sat at a table with Christina, Nick, my Swiss roommate, another IU student, a student from France and a student from Mexico. Just from being here a week, I have met so many people from so many different countries and I have learned so much in such a short amount of time (that was a lot of “so’s”, wasn’t it?). It has been extremely interesting conversing with other international students. What I have noticed is that everyone here is intelligent and knows a lot about the world around them. I am constantly trying to soak up their stories and information because, as ashamed as I now am of it, I really don’t know anything going on in the news today. I could tell you who Emma Stone is dating or what dress Nina Dobrev wore to the Emmy’s, but I couldn’t give you my opinion on issues in the world. At first, I was utterly embarrassed at the fact that I couldn’t hold an intellectual conversation, but now that I am being immersed in a culture where students have opinions and knowledge about current topics, I am slowly learning and am able to now form some opinions of my own.

The decision to study abroad, especially in England at the University of Kent, was a swift and uncalculated one on my part, but I am so happy that for one reason or another, I decided to apply. If not, I wouldn’t have been able to experience the beautiful culture and people of Canterbury, a place that I am now happy to call my home, well at least for the next year. 'Til next time-

And How Did You Feel About That??

So everyone we have now made it through the second week of school..............but quite honestly this week was three times longer than last week (I hope this is not a trend). This week in Nursing School life we had class again Mon-Wed and then another set of 8 hour orientations Thursday and Friday. I happen to be sitting in class right now......(don't tell my teacher) Lol. If i take anything away from what i have learned so far in college it is the process of multi-tasking which i happen to think i do very well......I mean i am doing it right now, Lol i am attentively listening and typing this blog while keeping my eyes on the power-point that we are going over. <------------Who wouldn't call that Talent??

FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER-----> http://twitter.com/#!/kaitDbay_08

I am very excited about the Psych rotation that i am in this semester. In some ways it is kind of scary...because right now we are learning about all of the precautions that we must take when being at the clinical site and what to wear and not wear, along with what we are allowed to say and some things we should absolutely never say! Also, i have never been more interested in assigned reading than i have been with my Psych textbook...it really is extremely interesting to understand how the brain works and what exactly is going on when people have mental disorders. It is sad in some ways...to realize at some points the person can't do anything about about and it takes a toll on everyone in the situation. I know it has to be a difficult situation and I just hope people realize that mental disorders are a disease and it takes patience and understanding to really treat them with the respect they deserve; because they are people just like everybody else. The link below is too the National Institute of Mental Health...for more specific information on mental disorders.

In other school news: We had our track meeting this past week, and I have to say I am soooooo READY!! Although track doesn't officially start until March 4th :( ....The new comers seem like that are going to be a good addition to the already talented field of athletes that we have. My fellow returners, I know.. have a unanimous goal which is to make it to Nationals and to win both the boys and girls Conference Titles. The girls did it last year with only three people! Which was extremely impressive, and I know with the talent from the freshman that we are adding this year number 1 is not out of our reach!

I would also like to mention in Sports news that my wonderful room mate Lauren Crump and best friend Breezy Strete are doing BIG THINGS this year in volleyball! Both Lauren, Breezy and the rest of the IUE VBALL team are a thrill to watch. It is interesting to see  how far the program has come even when being a part of it the two years that i participated!! The vball team is the definition of HARDWORK and it shows! I would recommend everyone try to catch at least one game and see what I am talking about :) There next home game is September 14! And all the home games are held at Seton Catholic High School!!

Also i must mention that the weather has done a complete 360......this past Labor Day weekend, specifically Saturday was extremely hot and then on actual Labor Day it was sooo chilly! But I am not complaining...warm weather is not my thing. I LOVE the Fall, I am an addictive coat, boot, scarf, jean buyer. It is almost becoming a problem Lol I counted my jeans the other day when i cleaned out my closet and i have exactly 62 pairs!!!!!! CRAZY!

Shopping Sprees and Royal Tea

My countdown is officially in the SINGLE DIGITS and the closer I get to my day of departure, the more nauseous excited I get! I have been talking about studying abroad and leaving since February and it STILL hasn’t truly hit me that I’ll be leaving and living in England for an entire school year. This past weekend I went shopping with my sister for my new European wardrobe, and when I say shopping, I mean like intensive shopping. I got leggings, pants, jeans, blouses, sweaters, make-up, boots, shirts, tanks and tees all of which are UH-mazing. I won’t say how much I spent (I would be totally ashamed and embarrassed) but I took a good massive chunk out of my bank account. Buying a new wardrobe made my upcoming year seem more real and exciting, but still, it’s hard to imagine myself living abroad. I feel like I’m stuck in this weird limbo of waiting around, not doing anything but still knowing that my life will drastically change in nine days. I think the first time it will really hit me, the fact that I’m living in England, will be as my plane takes off on the 16th. Thankfully, five of us from the program are flying over together so I’ll have four people there to ease my inevitable freak-out and vice versa!

Tea Party

Dining Room!

Besides shopping ‘til my card falls apart, I have also been hanging out with my closest friends and family. On August 27th, I had my first going away party (the second is this Saturday). This party was for my best friends and its theme was Royal Tea. My mother set everything up and helped me in planning the party; anything I could dream up, she could make reality. She made my invitations (she’s so crafty, like 24/7) which were like miniature Buckingham Palaces. You had to open the gates (which were kept closed by an authentic wax seal!) to read the invitation. This party required formal attire and an even more formal dining room. My mom tied extra ribbon from Christmas on the back of our chairs (Ha!) and used her finest tea sets and dishes to serve the food on. We had little party favors that accompanied our place settings. We had platinum tiaras and the highest quality diamonds which were kept safe in a little canary colored box. Ok, so really they were plastic tiaras and rings from Factory Card Outlet, but let a girl dream! On the menu we had: maple-oat scones, cream scones, lemon curd, clotted cream, raspberry jam, roast beef and horseradish hors d'oeuvres, cucumber and tomato tea sandwiches, mini mascarpone cupcakes with strawberry glaze and strawberry and pineapple with chocolate ganache. We truly ate like royalty! After stuffing our faces, we went and talked on my back porch about school, our dreams and what we hope to accomplish in this next year (we’re deep, I know). It was so nice to take a day out and relax with my best friends. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did!

With only nine more days in the states, I couldn’t be happier that I get to spend them with my family and friends.  I am even more excited that in my two-hundred and some days in England I will have the opportunity to meet and make new friends that will hopefully last a lifetime. 'Til next time-

Kelsey

It’s only getting tougher

VOLLEYBALL FIRST: Tuesday, September 6th, IU East volleyball battled for the 22nd spot in the nation.  Yes sir! You heard me right, we are now ranked 22nd in the nation! Fortunately for us, we’ve got so much to prove… STILL! Our schedule is only getting tougher. This Friday and Saturday we begin Conference play. Next week (and weekend) we are up against multiple teams that have a higher ranking than us. ONE BEING INDIANA TECH, ON WEDNESDAY (the 14th), AT HOME, AT 7pm. Not only do we need a packed gym, but we need to bring our “A” game. REVENGE WILL BE SWEET (remember, IN TECH beat us a few weekends back, but we got ‘em this time).

Don’t just be at the match, be part of the match! We need all the fans to be involved, be hyped, and BE LOUD! No one defeats us in our own den! :)

SCHOOL: The semester is really taking off.  I’ve only had each class a 2 or 3 times, but I’m feeling the pressure. And it’s only going to get tougher. My Communication Theory class is a 400 level course… talk about tough! There is so much thinking and reasoning that is required; my knowledge gained from the course will be very beneficial! My other classes are beginning to dive in just as deep.

I want summer back!

Look for a video next week.

Three Summer Goodbyes.

Me with my roommates/friends at our house in Cincinnati before going out. :)

"I do not think any word in the English dictionary could describe how I feel about my summer. The word "amazing" barely nicks the surface. I learned so much about myself: my strengths, weaknesses, and interests. I saw the beauty in the world, the beauty in people, and the beauty in politics (there is such a thing?)"
