CORNY Genetics
Sep 29, 2009 Uncategorized
Today we learned about CORN! SEE!
We had a pretty easy lab to do on Friday. Basically all we did was count the alleles of corn and then try to develop a ratio from them. There was a a lot of counting involved. We counted something like 2000 kernels of corn.
Another lab we did was to identify alleles frequencies in fruit flies. It was cool. Had a couple boring moments though as well, but what can you do, your not here to be entertained, your here to learn.
Here is a picture of greg and zach. They are looking at knocked out flies under a scope.
Greg had really know clue what he was looking at. He hogged the scope for an eternity. FOOR-EEER-VEEER!

IUPUI Symposium and Being an SI Leader
Sep 25, 2009 Uncategorized
I love being an SI leader. I get a chance to meet new people and socialize while I get to help other out! I have been in this program for a year and a half. I have so many great stories and fond memories form this experience.
From my understanding I do very well as a Senior SI leader. Most students who attend sessions average 1/2 to 1 letter grade higher than those that don’t. Jerri and Mary, my bosses, tell me My students average 2 letter grades better! That is awesome, right? Well it is of course even though I am quite modest about it. Which brings me to the main portion of this blog.
Jerri and Mary asked me to represent IU East this Sat at a Symposium for the program located at IUPUI. I have an hour block to speak to/with other leaders from the area and the nation. My topic is titled ” Facilitating Academic Study Skills to Students.” that is the dressed up fancy title. in reality its” what I do to get students a better grade and enjoy college.” LOL
I am a bit nervous, cause some of the other speakers are PHDs. Then I got an email saying that they will be video taping portions or all of my session. For use later… I was okay with the PHDs, but now…….. No really I’m sure ill be fine. Wish me luck! Ill enlighten you more on how it went!

Wow, IU EAST close to 3000 students! WOW! I wonder what the all time highest enrollment rate has ever been though. I mean I knew there was an increased rate seeing I have to do the same thing I do to people in the Walmart parking lot, stalk them to get a closer space, but wow 19.5%.
So the weekend is here. yeah. homework is 1/3 of the way complete. my goal get it all done before football!
Up coming events in my life.
Sleep… classes. Homework.
Hopefully I’ll get some time to write about other things, Mexico and the other advetures around North America I had this summer.
Also I’m going to have a Blog about me being an SI leader, how important it is, and my upcoming talk at IUPUI Symposium!!! Stay tuned!

labor day
Sep 9, 2009 Uncategorized
So who did any school work over labor day? I did…yeah i know sad, but I also took advantage of the extra time with friends. I actually had my live fantasy football draft. I got most of the players I wanted! Granted i didn’t realize this at the time, but ill have a lot of players out during one “off” week. the curse of getting lucky who you really want.
So I’ve had one lab in genetics. seems pretty cool. I’m gonna like the class I think. Ill get lab pics and videos up later as we do cooler and more hands on labs.
Today is big club day on campus. I’m also the VP of environment club so it was cool to see all the other booths with students signing up. Glad to be apart of this. Wish i still had more time to do more with the this club and other clubs though.
So i am also currently listening to the band frightened rabbit. Scottish band I recently have grown fond of. indie rock sounds a bit like Dave Matthews. I suggest look into them if ur a fan of indie and dave.
man. what a semester so far!

Day 2 & 3 of Week 1…
Sep 2, 2009 Uncategorized
Ahhh yes! I thrive off of chaos! organizing times for Bio L107 SI sessions can always be a challenge, but fun. I like challenges! so many students in this course its crazy but awesome! I got to meet some of my students for the 1st time yesterday. They seem eager and apathetic at the same time.
Yes that is possible.
Other then that my Spanish class seems to be a lot of work. just gotta keep a regimented schedule on times 2 study.
Genetics on the other hand… well can’t tell yet. seems fun! I know I might be fingered as a disruptive student, but it was only because so many awesome fellow classmates share this same class! DO I hear a complaint yet!? nooo. Ill be serious though! The week is flying by though oh so quickly.
I do have one more class it is online, more on that later…
Bearcreek=awesome breakfests by the way… nom nom nom biscuits n gravy!
So how is everyones 1st week going?!? any horror stories yet?

1st Week
Sep 1, 2009 Uncategorized
WOW! I have never seen the parking lots this full ever! This is totally great! I am vastly excited and very happy to be apart of this growing campus!
Hopefully you have all enjoyed my Belize Blogs! I’d really like to hear your feed backs as well of these blogs.
Heres how my week is panning out.
I think we can all agree this last weekend went way too fast. I blinked and classes started.
Day 1: Had Spanish, I’m a little scared, 1st foreign language in years. Although I am anxious to learn which I think will help a lot in the subject! Although looks like I have large workload for the class. This will keep me busy and not playing video games as much (sad face here). I will find the time though!
I also had my capstone for my senior year in biology. This seems like a lot of fun for us and for our instructors! Looking forward into doing the projects and being able to geek out on them! WOOT!
Day 2: … I woke up. facebooked right out of bed… I know bad right?! This is where I decieded to publish this blog.
more to come within a couple days. Plus a blog about the S.I. Leader Program that I work for =)
