The Creating Innovation Series includes diverse sessions that explore the role of art, design, and creativity in fostering innovation.
Designing for Innovation (Presenter: Michael Oakes)
Tuesday, December 3, 2013, 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m.
Using the design thinking process pioneered by the d.school at Stanford and the problem-solving design firm, IDEO, "Designing for Innovation" helps professionals learn to re-frame how they think about problems, processes, products, services, and business models. By emphasizing a human-centered point of view, the workshop offers participants concepts and skills they can immediately apply in both big and small contexts. There is a fee of $100 for this workshop to be paid at registration. A sack lunch is included and the session is scheduled for the Community Room in Whitewater Hall.
Michael J Oakes is currently senior lecturer in finance at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and previously director of the MBA program at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus. He teaches financial management, investments, and corporate finance, with research interests in financial markets, strategy, creativity, and innovation. He is a certified facilitator of the Design Thinker simulation.
Decoding Creativity (Presenter: Julia Roberts)

Every day we face challenges from the simple to the complex. We need to think flexibly, strategically and often collaboratively; We need to innovate. FourSight is an assessment tool that measures your preference for each one of the four thinking styles that are essential to innovation. Learn about yours and how to interact better with other creative styles to enhance your creative output, personally, and as part of a team. There is a fee of $100 for this workshop to be paid at registration. A light breakfast is included and the session is scheduled for the Community Room in Whitewater Hall.
Julia Roberts is the president and founder of Lemony Fresh Ideas, a consultancy devoted to helping clients squeeze the most out of their innovation efforts. Julia works as a facilitator, trainer, and certified creativity coach to juice up meetings and bring about fresh thinking. Roberts has a Masters certificate from Buffalo State College’s International Center for Creative Studies and has worked in ideation, concepting and strategic branding for over 25 years, with clients such as: American Express, Western Union, Kraft Food Services, Gevalia Kaffe, KitchenAid, and Warner Bros Video.
