Job Fairs & Interview Days

Job fairs bring together students seeking jobs and employers with job openings. Participating employers come from the Richmond area and, to a large extent, from the East Central Indiana region and offer a wide variety of professional opportunities.

IU East's Career Planning & Placement Center participates in two job fairs each Spring. The first one is devoted specifically to Health Care Providers and the second one is the combined employers job fair with representatives from all types of businesses.

As the Placement part of Career Planning office starts to grow, there will be opportunities for employers to schedule interview days for interested IU East students. Bookmark this page to keep posted on these offerings as they occur. You will be provided with a link to register for participation for those of interest. You are also urged to create your resume and have it reviewed by the Career Planning & Placement Office prior to scheduling an interview. Please see the "Job Search Guide" under Resources on the Job Search Assistance page listed on the left side of this page.

DOT Foods Interview Day

DOT Foods from Cambridge City, Indiana, will be available on the IU East campus for interviews on Wednesday, September 15 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. They will give a brief presentation at the top of each hour and will schedule interviews every half-hour. This is an excellent opportunity to find a part-time job to support yourself during your college years and one that could very easily become a full-time job for you after graduation. This company is outstanding in promoting from within the corporation!.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Belinda L. Wyss, Director, Career Planning & Placement, 765-973-8258, WZ 116A, or bwyss@iue.edu.

Making the Most of a Job Fair

Watch the notices on your school's Job Fair site and attend as many as you can. Not only will practice help you to perfect your personal presentation but will expand your network exponentially!

Before the Job Fair

  • Talk with a professional in your Career Planning & Placement Office (Whitewater Hall, Room 116A).
  • Create a resume and have it reviewed by the career counselor. Have it uploaded to the school's employment management web site if one is available.
  • Create a list of 3-5 references in case they are requested. (Be sure to ask your referencees for their help before including them on the list.)
  • Create your 30-second marketing commercial and practice, practice, practice!
  • Watch announcements for the participating employers and choose a few of particular interest.
  • Do your research! Look up information about the employers of interest:
    • Check their websites for information about their products/services
    • What types of jobs do they have open?
    • What kind of people are they looking for?
    • What kind of skills do these people need to have?
    • Develop some questions you would like to ask the employer representatives at the Fair
  • Network! Network! Network! Network with people you know and via social network sites like Linked-In and Facebook for more information about the companies. Also seek contact with employees you might know or seek information from alumni who work there.

During the Job Fair

  • Dress for success! Assume you will be interviewed and dress the part. Even if you don't get an interview at the Job Fair, you have already made a great impression!
  • Carry several copies of your resume with you. While some companies will be seeking employees for specific positions, some employers will collect resumes while there for possible future positions. Many employers have online application sites. Be sure to get all of the contact information you need to complete an application and download your resume.
  • Make sure to have a few copies of your reference list handy.
  • Have a firm handshake and make eye contact as you greet them! They are seeking employees who have enough confidence in themselves to do a great job and first impressions say a lot!
  • Take time to talk with employer representatives. You should have already done your homework about their company so you can better spend your time asking about the positions available (or available in the near future) and how your skills match their needs. Give them your 30-second marketing commercial and impress them with what you feel you can do for their company. Since practice makes perfect, don't give up if the first attempt doesn't go well. Keep trying with other employers there.
  • Collect information from each booth you visit including business cards from the employer representatives. Ask them the best way to contact them.

After the Job Fair

You now have a prime opportunity to make a distinctly good impression!

  • Use those business cards you collected to follow up and follow through.
  • Be sure to do everything you promised at the Job Fair. Complete the application and upload your resume.
  • Send a thank-you note or email to all with whom you talked! This shows that you are serious about their corporation and will set you apart from many who neglect to do so.
  • If you follow up on your application for a position, be sure to follow the preferred contact method and don't overdo it.
