Job Title:

Chancellor, Indiana University East (Richmond, Indiana, 47374)

Job Purpose:

The Chancellor is the chief executive officer of the campus and is responsible for the total operation of the campus, including leadership, planning, management, academic excellence, and continued development of campus programs at Indiana University East.

Directly Supervises:

An administrative team with responsibilities for academic affairs, administration, finance, external affairs, marketing, student affairs, advancement, information technology and an office staff to support the activities of the Chancellor.

Reports to:

The President of Indiana University, and through the President to the Board of Trustees.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership to the campus’ continuing growth and development as a baccalaureate-granting institution with selected associate and graduate degrees across the main campus in Richmond and three off-site education centers;
  • Promotes and develops a campus environment that encourages intellectual achievement and excellence by preserving the primacy of the academic function in the total campus enterprise and promoting academic standards, integrity, and academic freedom;
  • Implements policies formulated on a university-wide or campus-wide basis, including the recruitment, appointment, and promotion of all persons employed by the campus;
  • Communicates between the institution and its public constituencies in the geographical region, including the coordination and engagement with the IUE Board of Advisors;
  • Prepares, reviews, approves, and implements budgets, and fiscal plans, and seeks private financial support for the campus;
  • Translates the university mission into long- and short-term strategic plans and implements these plans through the cooperative efforts of appropriate individuals and groups, including the Board of Trustees, University President, IUE Board of Advisors, Faculty Senate, Staff Council, Professional Staff Council, Student Council, and others; and
  • Communicates effectively between the campus and the Office of the President;
Qualities and Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

The Chancellor must effectively engage the institution’s key constituencies—its faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the regional community of east-central Indiana and west-central Ohio. Considerable experience with and talent for leading an academic institution through growth and change is essential. The Chancellor must be creative and pragmatic; he or she must be able to develop, communicate, and implement a strategic vision for a campus in a period of transition and challenge. The Chancellor must have the ability to assess risk and make evidence-based decisions, must be sensitive to the marketplace in which the campus operates, must be comfortable working in an inclusive and collaborative setting, must possess strong analytical skills, and an exceptional work ethic. An unquestioned record of integrity and impeccable moral and ethical standards are essential qualities of the next Chancellor.

The ideal candidate must possess the following:
  • A terminal degree and record of academic achievement necessary for appointment as a full professor at Indiana University;
  • A commitment to shared governance;
  • Exceptional communications skills;
  • Superb relationship-building skills;
  • Successful strategic planning experience;
  • A commitment to playing a central role in the economic, social, and cultural development in the region;
  • Experience with and a commitment to non-traditional as well as traditional students;
  • A proven ability to work effectively with alumni relations and fund raising
