Commencement Instructions 2015

Arrive at 5:00 p.m., May 15, at the Tiernan Center, Richmond High School (if you are getting photos, you may want to show up an hour early).  Be at the Cafeteria by 5:10 p.m.  Bring your 3x5 name card that was given to you at rehearsal.

Tassels are worn to the right.  Honor cords are worn on the left shoulder.

Please give all your valuables and personal belongings to a family member or friend to hold.  We cannot guarantee the security of such items.

At 5:40 p.m., line up in the auxiliary gym, behind your Student Marshal, in numerical order, according to your 3x5 card number.  Hold on to your name card.  School banners will be handed to Student Marshals as they exit the auxiliary gym to join the processional.

Crowd Etiquette

Please ask that your family and friends remain in the auditorium until the commencement ceremony ends. If they must go to out to the foyer, please remain quiet.  Thanks!

The Procession

The order of the procession is:

  1. Grand Marshal
  2. Graduating class (when you get in the auditorium, remain standing)
  3. Faculty
  4. Platform Party

Following the conferral of degrees, graduates will be invited to the platform to receive diplomas.  Access to the platform will be by the steps on the left (as you face the platform).

As you reach the platform, hand your name card to the registrar, he will read your name as you cross the platform.   You will shake hands with Chancellor Cruz-Uribe and others. 

Return to your seat and remain standing until all graduates in your row have returned.

The Recession

The order of the recession is:

  • Platform Party
  • Faculty
  • Graduates

Diploma covers presented during the ceremony will not contain actual diplomas. December graduates should have already received their diplomas. May, June, and August graduates will be notified in writing, approximately four to six weeks after graduation by the Office of Student Records, letting them know that their diplomas have arrived. Graduates will then have the option of picking up their diploma in Whitewater Hall, Rm. 116 or having their diploma mailed to them.

After the ceremony, all graduates need to return their cap and gowns to Bookstore personnel in the auxiliary gym.
