Getting your application in on time
Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) prior to the beginning of the semester in which they intend to begin their methods courses. To ensure this is accomplished in a timely fashion the following deadline applies for all semesters:
- Applications for admission to Teacher Education must be submitted to the School Secretary no later than one week after grades are received for the semester just completed if it includes any of the TEP prerequisites
- To meet this deadline, students should seriously consider taking the PPST two semesters prior to their intended admission date to allow for
- - six (6) weeks delivery of scores
- - possible need to retake one or more portions of the exam to meet the passing scores.
- Students will be withdrawn from methods courses if they do not meet the admission requirements for the Teacher Education Program.
(Please note, students wishing to be admitted to Teacher Education in the Fall semester will not likely be able to do so if they take the July/August PPST exam just prior to admission. Those wishing to be admitted in the Spring semester run the risk of being unable to do so if they wait until November to take the exam.)
Retention in the Teacher Education Program
As described in the Model for Assessment, student progress is reviewed on a regular basis throughout the program. University and Education Advising Plans outline specific minimum performance requirements. The following items are also included as specific guidelines:
- Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or better.
- Demonstrate satisfactory progress in the area of professional
knowledge and competence by:- Achieving a 3.0 GPA in methods courses (see advising sheet) with no grade lower than a C+.
- Successfully completing all lab/field experiences and practicums.
- Maintain standards of appropriate social, ethical, and academic conduct as described in the APP process.
Candidates failing to meet one or more of these three standards are dismissed from the Teacher Education Program. Candidates who have been dismissed from the program can request probationary status.

The following information is effective for coursework and assessments taken after May 15, 2003
Any candidate who, at the conclusion of two enrollments (grade recorded) in the same required foundations or methods course, has not earned the required grade for admission to or retention in the program will be permanently excluded from the teacher education program and completing requirements for certification at Indiana University East.
Any candidate who has not met division requirements, in any combination of three foundations and/ or methods courses, at the conclusion of the first enrollment in said courses, will be permanently excluded from the teacher education program and completing requirements for certification at Indiana University East.
Probation
The following information is effective for coursework and assessments taken after May 15, 2003
Candidates who are dismissed from the Teacher Education Program (TEP) may request probationary status for the following semester (summer semester may be excluded). The request for probation must be made by the candidate in writing within 15 days from the date on the letter of dismissal. These letters will be sent with delivery confirmation. Probation is granted at the discretion of the Probation Hearing Committee. In the case of portfolio-based dismissals, a member of the Division of Education Assessment Committee will also serve on the Probation Hearing Committee.
A candidate will have an opportunity to present evidence in support of his/her request for probation. A written decision and terms of the probation (if appropriate) will be provided to the candidate by the Chair of the Division Admissions Committee within thirty days and will become part of the candidate's permanent record.
If probation is denied, candidates who have registered early will be administratively withdrawn from Education courses for which they have registered.
If probationary status is granted, in most cases, the candidate will not be permitted to remain on probationary status more than one semester. If retention standards are not met after one semester, the candidate is not readmitted to the TEP. Candidates who successfully meet retention standards by the end of the probationary semester will be admitted to the TEP and a letter placed into their permanent record indicating their release from probationary status. Candidates are still required to follow all Division Standards as specified in the Teacher Education Handbook on the IU East Division of Education webpage.
Once admitted to the Teacher Education Program, a candidate may only apply for probationary status one time. Subsequent failures to meet the terms of probation or program requirements will result in permanent exclusion from the teacher education program and completing requirements for certification at Indiana University East.
Readmission/probation should not be assumed and are not automatic. Readmission/probation is at the discretion of the Admissions Committee, after a careful review of the candidate’s complete history with regard to completing the program and obtaining teacher certification. If a candidate is granted readmission, it is probationary.
(Passed by IU East Division of Education February 27, 2003 )
Appeal
All candidates have the right to the University appeals process.
Candidate Responsibility
In every case and at each step of the probation and/or retention process, it is the responsibility of the candidate to initiate all requests and to meet all deadlines.
