Transition to Teaching Program (T2T)

The Indiana University East School of Education supports qualified individuals who want to transition from a career and an academic major outside of education into a career as a licensed teacher. Both the Richmond and Lawrenceburg campuses offer this program. The Transition to Teaching program provides such persons with the knowledge and skills to be an effective teacher. This program is governed by Indiana state statute, Indiana University East and the School of Education policies and procedures.

The Transition to Teaching program is a three semester program, beginning in January of each year for the Elementary program and May for the Secondary program in Richmond. The Lawrenceburg campus offers a Secondary T2T program that begins each May. Students study educational psychology, student diversity, reading and content area methodology. Field experiences in a variety of school settings occur every semester, including a two semester internship in a classroom at the developmental level appropriate to the student's career objectives and proposed licensure. Most classes are taught during the daytime. All field placements are completed during K-12 school hours.

Advising

Each Indiana University East Transition to Teaching student will have a graduate advisor who will assist you throughout your application process and licensure program. The admissions process will culminate in an individual licensure plan unique to the student's prior education, experience and professional objective.

Elementary Education Highlights (grades K-6)

  • 3-semester program includes credit that may apply towards a Master's degree.
  • Applicants are expected to participate in the program on a full time basis during their entire internships.
  • Intensive year long internship including semester-long, all day student teaching.
  • Upon successful completion interns will have teacher certification

Secondary Education Highlights (Middle/High School)

  • 3-semester program (summer-fall-spring) includes credit that may apply towards a Master’s degree
  • Applicants are expected to participate in the program on a full time basis during their entire internships.
  • Intensive year long internship including semester-long, all day student teaching.
  • Upon successful completion of the program interns will have teacher certification.

Admissions Standards for Transition to Teaching

Prospective students must minimally have a bachelor's degree granted by an institution with accreditation accepted by Indiana University East.

GPA Requirement

Prospective students must have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a 2.5 GPA and five years of professional experience pertinent to working within the K-12 developmental span.

Requirements For Elementary Education Students

Individuals wanting to teach elementary aged children must have college level coursework or demonstrable knowledge and experience in content areas taught by elementary teachers.

Content areas for which general education coursework or knowledge must be documented include:

  • math above college level algebra
  • science with a lab
  • English composition and literature
  • social studies including United States History.

Graduate degrees with minimally a 3.0 GPA will be considered as remediation of a substandard undergraduate GPA. Students who elect to supplement their content area preparation above and beyond the 24 credit Elementary Transition to Teaching program will sign a program plan indicating that those supplemental courses were elective, prior to being admitted to the Transition to Teaching program.

Requirements For Secondary Education Students

Individuals wanting to teach middle school or high school students (grade 6-12) must have degree (major) in the content area (math, sciences, English, social studies) in which they want licensure with a 3.0 GPA in the content area or a 2.5 GPA and 5 years of professional working experience utilizing the content area knowledge. One example would be a person with a biology major, a 2.5 GPA and 5 years in biology related research. Graduate degrees in the content area with a 3.0 GPA will be considered as remediation for a substandard undergraduate GPA.

Individuals with a degree outside of the content area for which they seek licensure, may elect to take supplemental coursework not included in the 18 credit Secondary Transition to Teaching Program. Examples might include engineers wanting to teach science, a business and accounting major wanting to teach math, lawyers wanting to teach social studies, etc. These individuals may also want to submit documentation for a prior learning assessment, showing knowledge and application from work experience and other forms of professional certification.

The graduate advisors can assist you with advising sheets for specific content areas. These will be helpful as you plan supplemental content coursework. Students will sign a program plan indicating the number of credits they elected to take above and beyond program requirements.

Other Requirements

Candidates completing T2T programs meet all academic requirements for provisional licensure at the appropriate level in the state of Indiana. Persons with misdemeanor or felony convictions may not be eligible for licensure.
