Job Description

Indiana University East, Richmond, IN, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of English position in the Rhetoric and Composition, to begin August 2018 with possible conversion to tenure-track in the future.  Visiting Assistant Professor position will design innovative face-to-face and online courses in graduate composition studies courses (likely one per semester including summer) and undergraduate composition courses (W131 first year composition, W231 professional writing, W270 argumentative writing, and others).  The teaching load will be 3/3 annually, contributing to the writing program and Graduate Composition Studies program.  In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, faculty conduct research, mentor students in professional development, and participate in department, campus, or university level service.  Candidate is expected to contribute to growing online Graduate Certificate Program in Composition Studies, and MA composition studies completion program, and Undergraduate College Composition Program.  Preferred secondary areas include one or more of the following: digital literacy; online learning; multimodal learning; first-year technical and professional writing; and Writing in the Disciplines/Writing across the Curriculum.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities :

Teach face-to-face and online undergraduate and graduate courses in Composition and Rhetoric, and other courses in the program based on faculty expertise and departmental needs.

Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly and effectively. Use methods, materials, and technology appropriate to the subject matter.

Manage the learning environment by keeping accurate records, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school and campus academic policies.

Develop a professional rapport with diverse populations within the university and community.

Create and implement an active service agenda within the department and campus with particular based on faculty expertise.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A PhD in Composition and Rhetoric, specializing in composition theory and pedagogy.
  • Experience in teaching online or ability to do so within one semester is required.
  • Commitment to high quality graduate and undergraduate teaching.
