Job Description

Indiana University East, Richmond, IN, invites applications for a Part-Time Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach.  The Part-time Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach will perform a variety of roles for the sport assigned to including making contact with recruits, setting up visits with recruits, help with recruit's visits. Help with supervision and coaching at practices and matches. The position will report to  the Athletic Director, the Part-time Head Coach performs a variety of duties including planning, coaching, recruiting, managing and guiding the men's and women's cross country program. This part-time head coaching position carries out all of the duties of the position in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of affiliated national, regional, and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the NAIA, and the University.

The Head coach will not engage in any outside activities in television, radio, clothing or shoe sponsorship, internet, or camps, unless those activities are expressly approved in writing and in advance by the Athletic Director.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NAIA and Conference regulations. Coach team members individually and in groups, and demonstrate game techniques. May manage a designated skill development area. Always teach and demand respect and sportsmanship towards officials, opponents, teammates and oneself as well as correct techniques and skills to play the sport and to help players avoid injury. Safety of the players is always a top priority.

Recruit quality prospective student-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions. Coordinate with the Athletic Business Office the planning of recruiting and team travel.

Help monitor the purchase of uniforms, equipment and supplies, including accountability for expense control and administration of the sport's budget. Insure the facilities and any checked out equipment is properly maintained and in proper order before, during and after practices or games. Participate in the selection and fitting of team equipment.

Comply with academic policies, standards and requirements of the university, including the monitoring and encouraging the regular progress toward an academic degree. Make good faith efforts, in cooperation with the university's faculty and administration, to meet all student-athletes' academic requirements and to integrate sports into the whole spectrum of academic life for all student-athletes. Use reasonable efforts to arrange travel and scheduling by student-athletes in such a manner as to minimize lost classroom time.

Promote the athletic program and specific sport by attending and participating in a reasonable number of public relations programs, community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing (when needed). Assist in organization of sports information materials, i.e. media guides, press releases, etc., as directed by Athletic Director. Perform other related duties that are incidental to the work described herein.

Salary

The salary for this position is $15.00 per hour. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: A Bachelor's degree in related field is required or high school diploma with a high level of amateur or professional play and/or coaching experience.
  • Minimum Experience: One (1) year of experience coaching cross country at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least three (3) years of experience running cross country at the college level or higher is highly recommended.
  • Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, the River State Conference and the NAIA.

    SPORT SPECIFIC SKILLS: Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes.

    OTHER: Authorization to drive a motor vehicle on behalf of Indiana University and certification in basic first aid are also required for this position. Ability to work evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check is required.
    • American Heart Instructor Certification in CPR as well as playing experience at the collegiate level is preferred.
    • A strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and a working knowledge of the NAIA rules and regulations is required.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence is needed. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public is required.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals along with the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs is required.
    • Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes as well as the ability to attend seminars, meetings and other professional development opportunities at or away from IU East. Knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision as needed.
    • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form as well as the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, the River State Conference and the NAIA.
    • Authorization to drive a motor vehicle on behalf of Indiana University and certification in basic first aid are also required for this position as is the ability to work evenings and weekends.
