MUS Z310 Special Topics: Sound Art Design and Projects (3 cr)

TR 02:00 - 03:15 (RW 217) - McKinley.
Sound-Art is a course that explores the history, aesthetics, and design of works of art that utilize sound as a shaping element and/or expressive modality. Such works include, but are not limited to, multi-media installations and sculpture that employ sound in some manner. Practical applications, methods of aesthetic evaluation, the nature of sound and acoustics, and the intersection of two and three dimensional art with music will be discussed. The course culminates in student created installations and pieces of sound-art pieces as part of an exhibition on campus. Guest lecturers for this course include composer and sound-artist, Dr. Marc Jensen from the University of Oklahoma, and IU East Fine Arts instructor Ed Thornburg.

  • Prerequisite: None. Some previous coursework or experience with fine arts and/or music will be expected.

A course designed to teach the fundamentals of music, including reading and singing. This course is open to students in the Elementary Education program. Students outside of this program should consider MUS-T101 Introduction to Music.

Music Theory and Musicianship

MUS T101 Introduction to Music (3 cr)

TR 12:30 - 1:45 (RW 217) - Rogan.
An entry-level class for those interested in the basic workings of music. This class introduces the fundamentals of melody and harmony with basic concepts of music notation, ear training and keyboard skills. Open to all students. This course also serves as a prerequisite preparatory course for music majors and minors. Offered each semester.

MUS T114 Music Theory II (3 cr)

MW 11:00 - 12:15 (RW 217) - McKinley.
An continuation of T113. Further study of diatonic harmony, melody, and counterpoint. Includes detailed study of representative compositions. Intended for music students or highly motivated non-music majors.

  • Prerequisite: MUS T113 or consent of the director of music studies.
MUS T116 Sight-Singing And Aural Perception II (1 cr)

TR 10:00 - 10:50 (RW 215) - Rogan.
Diatonic melody and harmony; aural skills, music sight-reading, keyboard skills. Music majors must take this course concurrently with MUS-T114.

Electronic Music

MUS K430 Electronic and Computer Music I (3 cr)

MW 02:00 - 03:15 (RW 215) - McKinley.
An exploration and comprehensive study of analog and digital music synthesis using current hardware and computer software tools. Topics include digital audio recording and editing using Ableton Live, ProTools, and an introduction to Max/MSP. Includes a detailed survey of the styles and literature of electronic music from the early radio studios to the present day.

Music History, Musicology, and Music Literature

MUS I102 Literature and Structure 2 (2 cr)

A continuation course of MUS-I101. This course explores writing and talking about music, and introduces basic analytical tools including the recognition of musical structures and identification of forms. A prerequisite preparatory course for music majors and minors.

MUS M174 Music for the Listener I (3 cr)

Open to all students. This course introduces ways of listening and understanding music of different styles and periods through a broad survey of representative music in history. The first semester explores Western music from its origins to the 19th Century.

MUS M175 Music for the Listener I (3 cr)

Open to all students. This course introduces ways of listening and understanding music of different styles and periods through a broad survey of representative music in history. The second semester explores Western music from its origins from the 19th Century to the present. NOTE: It is not required to have had M174 to take this course.

MUS Z103 Special Topics: History of Country Music (3 cr)

Open to all students. A survey of the origins, styles and trends in the American musical genre known as country.
