University College underway with hire of executive director
Carrie Heller is the executive director of University College, a new office established at Indiana University East to provide first-year students with the academic and personal support they need to be successful. Heller began her duties on June 1. Heller has a M.S. in College Student Personnel Administration from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.

School of Nursing gala to honor excellence in nursing

The Indiana University East School of Nursing will honor five recipients with excellence awards during the nursing gala. The ‘09 Celebration of Caring gala will be held on Saturday, July 25 from 7-9:30 p.m. on the IU East Hayes Hall patio.

Jewell Spears will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Nursing Award. This award honors a nurse with a distinguished career as a registered nurse and exemplary contributions to health and wellness. Spears is a graduate of Richmond High School, the Reid Memorial Hospital and the Earlham College nursing program. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1957 from Earlham College.

Service-Learning center selects inaugural faculty fellows
The first class of IU East Faculty Fellows have been chosen for the Center for Service-Learning program, a new incentive created as a part of the Building a Service-Engagement Infrastructure grant. These faculty members will develop and deploy their service-learning course plans during the summer and fall.

IU East to offer RN to BSN Mobility program at Good Samaritan Hospital

Monday, July 13th, 2009

The Ohio Board of Regents has recently approved the offering of the Indiana University East Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science (RN to BSN) Mobility Option at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut signed the proposal signifying this program met the standards and requirements of the Ohio Board of Regents. This approval speaks to the high quality of the educational program as well as its intention to meet the need of registered nurses who wish to return to school to complete a BSN degree in nursing. Approval has been granted through December 31, 2012.

Dean Clark presents at nursing institute
Karen Clark, dean of the School of Nursing, presented “The RN to BSN Educational Process: Moving Past the Perception of Jumping Through Hoops” at the Drexel University Nursing Education Institute: Educating for Change recently held in Arlington, Va on June 6.
