IU East gathering donations for Chester Heights residents affected by fire

November 3, 2010 |

Indiana University East will collect items for the Chester Heights Building B residents who lost their homes to a fire on October 27. Anyone interested in donating gift cards, clothing, toiletries, or other household necessities, may drop-off items at upcoming events.

Tonight, IU East has partnered with G101.3, the American Red Cross and Richmond Square Mall to raise donated items for the residents. Items are being collected from 5-7 p.m. at the Richmond Square Mall. IU East will donate new Wolf Wear gear for the residents as well as additional items collected during the Nearly Naked Mile event during Homecoming last week.

This weekend items will be collected during the Red Wolves volleyball team double-header. IU East plays Mountain State University at noon and Berea College at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, at the Seton Catholic High School Gym.

Donations may be taken to the men’s basketball home game on Tuesday, November 9. The game versus the University of Michigan-Dearborn begins at 7 p.m. and will be played at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.

Mary Blakefield, Dean of Students, said five of the residents in Building B were IU East students displaced by the fire. Blakefield said IU East is working with the students to provide academic and financial support, replace textbooks, or computers that were lost in the fire. Students received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross for clothing, food, items and temporary housing.
