Nursing students appear in ABC news video

January 31st, 2011

IU East students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program were on Good Morning America’s “Your Three Words” segment on Saturday, January 29. The segment encourages viewers to share what’s on their mind in three words.

Around the 2:24 mark, the students share two messages: “Make a Difference” and “Be a Nurse.” The video is available online.

Paula Baumann, lecturer of nursing, said 93 students (92 sophomores and one senior) participated in the video message. They are enrolled in the Intro to the Discipline (Nursing) and Health and Wellness courses which Baumann co-teaches with Tonya Breymier, also a lecturer of nursing at IU East.

Baumann said she watches ABC Good Morning America regularly and knew about the “My Three Words” segment featured each week. As part of a class assignment, students create video commercials to promote the image of nursing and increase recruitment of individuals into nursing.

“I thought it would be a good idea to submit our own version of “My Three Words” to ABC to get the word out nationally about the value and benefits of choosing nursing,” Baumann said.

She came up with the two sets of the three words and talked to her students who then made the signs shown in the video. The video was shot in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall. Students wore IU East apparel and borrowed an IU East banner from the Office of External Affairs to highlight the university nursing program. The class received assistance from the Office of Teaching and Learning Center at IU East to upload the video to the ABC website.

“I was excited we were selected to be part of the segment,” Baumann said.
