Blakefield receives Distinguished Alumnus Award
Mary Blakefield, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, received her alma matter’s Distinguished Alumnus Award during the college’s commencement ceremony held May 8. Blakefield is a member of the Maysville Community and Technical College Class of 1980.

Blakefield went on to attend the University of Kentucky where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree, master’s degree and Ph.D., all in biology. In 1984, she returned to Maysville Community and Technical College as a part-time instructor teaching Introduction to Human Biology and Health. She also taught at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. before joining the faculty at IU East.

Blakefield has received numerous honors and awards including the award for Outstanding Service to Students.

Tutorial Services staff present at national conference
Mary Mahank, director of Tutorial Services, Jerri Libert, coordinator of Supplemental Instruction, and Carvin Rinehart, Supplemental Instruction Leader, conducted an all-day pre-conference workshop at the Fourth Regional Conference on Supplemental Instruction at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas on Tuesday, May 19.

IU East’s SI program won the International Outstanding SI Program award in 2008. Mary and Jerri were asked to describe the SI program as it is implemented at IU East and explain the rationale behind the program’s methods. Mary, Jerri, and Carvin offered conference participants an interactive session in which these strategies were modeled.

IU East staff present at Community Media Summit
Two Indiana University East staff members presented at the Community Media Summit, hosted by the Central States Alliance for Community Media April 23-25 at the Holiday Inn in Richmond, Ind.

John Oak Dalton, director of Communications and Marketing, and Nick Poling, assistant operations director at WCTV, joined Norm Compton of Access Fort Wayne in presenting “Current Tech Trends.”

The staff of WCTV also hosted a reception as part of the summit on Thursday, April 23 at the facility in Hayes Hall.
