IU East’s second community writing marathon to focus on art and place

October 3rd, 2012

Indiana University East and other community organizers are planning the second event in a yearlong writing series.

The next community writing marathon will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, and focus on writing about art and place across the Indiana University East, Ivy Tech Community College, and Reid Hospital & Health Care Services campuses.

The event will coincide with the Whitewater Valley Annual Art Competition that features a lecture by this year’s juror, Barbara Tannenbaum, curator of Photography at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and an open judging of this year’s entries.

“The event will provide a rich environment for writing,” said Katherine Frank, dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at IU East. “Not only will people be able to write about the many entries, but they will also be able to write about works of art across the three participating organizations. We are excited to be working with both Ivy Tech Community College and Reid Hospital & Health Care Services on this event and to be able to feature the larger ‘campus’ as our writing canvas. The collaborative spirit of the Community Writing Project and its committee is evident in the design of this event.”

Writers will convene at 10:30 a.m. in Whitewater Hall at IU East and then have time to write prior to the lecture. If people chose to attend and write about the lecture, they may, or using the campus maps provided, they may explore other works of art at IU East, Ivy Tech Community College, and Reid Hospital & Health Care Services. At 1:30 p.m., the writers will reconvene to share their writing and then are free at 2 p.m. to attend the open judging, continue writing, or conclude for the day.

The community writing marathon is designed to foster writing and communication and is open to writers of all ages and abilities. Writers younger than 16 should be accompanied by an adult. To RSVP for the event by Thursday, October 11, email michking@iue.edu or call (765) 973-8219.
