Nursing students share Navajo stories learned while visiting Chinle
Senior nursing students will share stories they learned while in Chinle, Ariz., during “Voices of the Dine (Navajo)” on Monday, December 3. The storytelling event will be held at 4 p.m. in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall.

Nursing students travel annually to a Navajo Reservation in Chinle as part of the School of Nursing’s outreach programs. Students are immersed in the culture and experience home health care and hospital care. In return the students provide teaching presentations in the reservation school system.

The event is free and open to the public.

Business lecturer receives Woman of Excellence Award
Carla Messer, visiting lecturer of business administration, received a Woman of Excellence Award by the West Chester – Liberty Chamber Alliance. The 11th annual Women of Excellence Awards Dinner and Gala was held Nov. 18 at Cincinnati Marriott North at Union Centre.

Messer, who is the founder and chief results officer of BestWork, LLC, was recognized for her efforts as president of the Board at Hope House Rescue Mission. She obtained grant funding to help with operating funds and capital improvements, including renovation of a former crack house that now houses 91 children and over 400 women. According to the chamber, she also brought  job attainment skills like GED, college courses, computer skills and coaching for interviews to the shelter.

Messer is also a mentor to her students at IU East and to young women in The YWCA “Rising Stars” program.

Assistant professor of nursing accepted to LEAD program
Tonya Breymier, assistant professor of nursing and associate dean for nursing graduate programs, has been accepted to the National League for Nursing Leadership Institute’s LEAD program, Class of 2013. The LEAD program focuses on leadership development for nurse educators in emerging administrative leadership roles.

During this year-long program, Breymier and a cohort of peers will examine organizational systems and leadership processes focusing on strategic planning, build high performance teams, learn financial management, and develop a personal career plan to advance in organizational leadership. Throughout the year participants are encouraged to individually grow and foster interactions within the cohort.

 
IU East receives Pride of CASE V Awards
IU East has received a Gold award in the Best New Alumni Program category for its “ReConnect 2012” campaign and a Silver in the Best Collaborative Programs category for Run with the Wolves 5K from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District V. CASE is an international association of education advancement officers, and District V includes members from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

“ReConnect 2012” was an innovative program with a “new student orientation” format to re-orient alumni to campus. The Run with the Wolves 5K is held annually in July and attracts more than 500 participants. The event proceeds benefit the IU East Alumni Association and IU East Athletics.
