IU East Whitewater Valley Annual Art Competition accepting entries Sept. 23-27

Indiana University East is accepting art entries September 23-27 for the 2013 Whitewater Valley Annual Art Competition (WVAAC). The competition will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, in Whitewater Hall. Prior to the judging, there will be a juror presentation at 11:30 a.m. in Tom Raper Hall, room 124.BuzzSpector

The top ten entries will receive a monetary award. Artists with accepted entries will be notified by Monday, October 14.

This year’s competition will be juried by Buzz Spector, an artist whose artwork has been shown in such museums and galleries as the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.

Spector has received several awards including the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. He was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1982, 1985 and 1991. Spector received his B.A. in Art from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and his M.F.A. with the Committee on Art and Design at the University of Chicago.

Spector is currently the dean of the College and Graduate School of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University.

The WVAAC receives 300 to 400 pieces of art for the competition each year. Previous entries have included works from high schools and universities, art organizations and centers and independent artists. The competition is open to all artists, age 17 and older, who live within a 300-mile radius of Richmond, Indiana.

Entries for the competition may include drawings, paintings, mixed media, photography, printmaking, computer graphics, relief sculpture and relief. Entries must be hand-delivered to The Gallery, Whitewater Hall, on the IU East campus between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday, September 23, through Friday, September 27. Entries will not be accepted after September 27.

Each artist may submit up to three entries. Fees are $20 for one entry, $30 for two entries, and $40 for three entries.

Accepted entries will be on exhibit in The Gallery from October 16 to December 6. The artist opening reception and awards presentation will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, in Whitewater Hall.
