IU East now offers communication studies degree program in Lawrenceburg

October 9, 2009 |

Indiana University East announced today (October 9) that a new degree completion program for a bachelor’s degree in communication studies will be offered in Lawrenceburg, Ind. located at Ivy Tech Southeast’s Lawrenceburg Riverfront Campus. The program was approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education at its meeting today held at IU East.

This is the fourth degree completion program offered by IU East at its Lawrenceburg regional center. In June, IU East began offering the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, RN to BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), and Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education completion programs. IU East offers degree programs in Lawrenceburg targeted at employment opportunities upon graduation.

“By making the third and fourth year of bachelor’s degree programs available in Lawrenceburg and online, students in the southern portion of our region, many of whom live too far away from the Richmond campus to make the commute on a regular basis, have a way to complete their degrees”, said Larry Richards, IU East executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “The southernmost portion of eastern Indiana does not have ready access to four-year institutions in Indiana and we are trying to fill that gap.”

Students who have completed an associate degree program in communication may now continue their course of study to earn an Indiana University bachelor’s degree in Lawrenceburg. The associate degree fully articulates with the bachelor’s programs. Additionally, these programs will serve students who transfer from other institutions.

Recent surveys of local employers identified advanced communication skills as attributes in high demand. Graduates of this program will be trained in the very latest communication methods and tools permitting entry employment in a number of professional and managerial positions.

IU East is pursuing plans to bring a master’s degree program in Education to Lawrenceburg.  The campus also offers online degree completion programs in Business, Communication Studies and English with a concentration in Technical and Professional Writing.

Students can enroll in the degree programs now for the spring semester.  For more information about the programs, contact Greg Braxton-Brown, director of Southeast Indiana Programs at the IU East Lawrenceburg Center, at gbb@iue.edu.
