Richmond, Ind. — Indiana University East awarded five scholarships for the 2011 Summer Research Scholar Program. Undergraduate students receive $2,000 to conduct a research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
Indiana University East will offer two new minor degree programs beginning this fall. The Minor in Sports Coaching and the Minor in Sports Marketing and Management will be open to all students pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

Ivy Tech Community College Richmond and Indiana University East have developed a partnership to enhance services for military students and veterans. The two institutions collaborated for funding through Operation Diploma, an initiative of the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, and received $99,999 beginning July 1, 2011, for several initiatives to help military and veteran students with their educational goals and employability.
Indiana University East has completed its transition to a full-fledged baccalaureate and master’s degree institution. During the 40th Commencement Ceremony held in May, the university conferred its final three associate degrees.
Indiana University East experienced a continued increase in its enrollment during its first summer session.
During the first summer session, the number of students enrolled increased by 11.6 percent compared to last year, and credit hour enrollment increased by 11.8 percent.

Rick McKinney of Eaton, Ohio, received a Jules and Gwen Knapp Ambassador Scholarship from Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) USA. The national scholarship recognizes the leadership, teamwork and communication skills developed in SIFE students.

Indiana University East students who take 12 or more credit hours and complete the semester with a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale are named to the Indiana University East Dean’s List. The following is the spring 2010 Dean’s List. The list is sorted by the student’s listed hometown.
Wazir Mohamed, assistant professor of sociology, did not plan for his life to lean toward academics and research. Born and raised in a rural village with 12 families in Guyana in the 1950s, he was a rice farmer before he chose to pursue academics. He decided to go to college at the University of Guyana where he earned his Diploma in Public Communications and a bachelor’s degree in Communications.
The Indiana University East Criminal Justice program is hosting the Court of Appeals of Indiana on campus Wednesday, April 7. The court will hold oral arguments at 12:15 p.m. in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall. The court session is open and free to the public.
