IU East Honors Convocation celebrates faculty, staff excellence

IU East introduces new faculty and staff

Monday, January 31st

Indiana University East is pleased to welcome new faculty and staff beginning this spring semester.

School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Parul Khurana is a visiting assistant professor of Cell Biology. Khurana received her Bachelor of Science in Botany and her Master of Science in Plant Molecular Biology from the University of Delhi, in India. She completed her Ph.D. in Plant Cell Biology from Purdue University in 2010.

Humanities and Social Sciences faculty receive funding for research
Wazir Mohamed
, assistant professor of sociology, received an award from Indiana University’s Summer Faculty Research Support Fund to facilitate the completion of field research for a book in progress, Sugar, Land, and Marginalization: Guyana and the World Economy, 1838-2010, to be completed by December 2011.

IU East announces new faculty

Indiana University East has new full-time faculty members on staff this fall. The additional faculty will further enhance the campus’ mission.

“The additional faculty further enhances the campus’ mission as a comprehensive bachelor’s and master’s degree institution,” says Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Larry Richards, “and we plan to add more next fall.”

External Affairs directors presented at Blog Indiana, eduWeb

Rob Zinkan, vice chancellor for External Affairs, and John Oak Dalton, director of Communications and Marketing, presented “Social Web Integration: Are You “All In?”” at the annual Blog Indiana social media conference held August 20-21 in Indianapolis. The presentation shared IU East’s innovative approach to integrating social media into its overall marketing mix.

Biotechnology professor studies genes that cause aging

Kimberly Greer, assistant professor of biotechnology, is researching canine hereditary disease and aging/longevity and connecting the research to the human genes that could help people to live longer, healthier lives.kimgreervideo2

Greer has been drawn to research in the laboratory that could help explain why smaller canine breeds may outlive their larger canine peers.

NSM faculty collaborate to publish findings for use of phylogenic species identification
School of Natural Science and Mathematics faculty members Markus Pomper, Dale Beach and Mike Foos (emeritus); IU East B.S. in Biology graduate and former laboratory coordinator, Nickie May; and co-authors Don Ruch, from Ball State University, and Kathy Sheehan, from the University of Colorado, received notification that their paper, “Phylogeny of Pilobolaceae,” has been accepted for publication and will appear in an upcoming issue of Mycologia. This paper re-describes a family of fungi and proposes the use of phylogenic species identification to distinguish among isolates of the genus Pilobolus more accurately. This publication represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration utilizing the laboratory facilities at IU East.

Informatics professor develops program to help students learn recursion

Gregory Weber, associate professor of informatics, has developed an open source software program to help informatics students to effectively learn recursion by drawing diagrams.

Sifflet is a visual, functional programming language for users to make programs by drawing diagrams to connect functions and other units. Use of Sifflet provides a graphical high-level view of how a complex computation works, and allows users to ‘zoom in’ to see more details as needed.

Summer Research Scholars study projects ranging from biology to service-learning

Indiana University East awarded six scholarships for the 2010 Summer Research Scholar Program. Undergraduate students receive $2,000 to conduct a research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Funding for the program is provided by the Indiana University Office of the Vice Provost for Research and is matched by funds from IU East. The competitive program has expanded from the first single award given to now include up to six students each summer.

IU East to offer bachelor’s degree in psychology

Monday, July 12th

Indiana University East will offer a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree program this fall.

Currently, students interested in majoring in psychology are enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Behavioral and Social Sciences with a concentration in psychology.
