Harper is guest on radio show to discuss 1968 explosion following Indianapolis tragedy
Jean Harper, associate professor of English, was a guest on the “Afternoon Show” on WIBC 93.1 FM in Indianapolis. Harper talked about the 1968 Richmond explosion in relation to the gas explosion on the Southeast side of Indianapolis.

Jean Harper, associate professor of English, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for writing (prose). The fellowship will support work on her book, Horses and Divorces.
The fellowship is designed to give writers the time and freedom to pursue their work; the creative writing fellowships are the NEA’s most direct investment in America’s artists. Harper is the only person in Indiana to receive the fellowship in literature for this year.

IU East hosts discussion on service-learning contributes to academic success
Several Indiana University East faculty, staff and students participated in the Indiana University Partnerships and Reciprocity Conference on service-learning initiatives. The conference was held at IUPUI November 14 and had live participants at all eight Indiana University campuses.

Humanities and Social Sciences faculty receive funding for research
Wazir Mohamed, assistant professor of sociology, received an award from Indiana University’s Summer Faculty Research Support Fund to facilitate the completion of field research for a book in progress, Sugar, Land, and Marginalization: Guyana and the World Economy, 1838-2010, to be completed by December 2011.

Jean Harper, associate professor of English, was recently awarded a fellowship to the MacDowell Colony located in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Harper will reside at the artists’ colony for six weeks, beginning in August into September.

Karen Clark, dean of the School of Nursing, presented “The RN to BSN Educational Process: Moving Past the Perception of Jumping Through Hoops” at the Drexel University Nursing Education Institute: Educating for Change recently held in Arlington, Va on June 6.

Business dean chairs conference session
David W. Frantz, dean of the School of Business, served as chair of a session on “Critical Incidents in
Business Ethics,” and as a discussant in a session on “Business Cases in Business Development” at the Society for Case Research at the International MBAA conference held in Chicago from March 18-20.

Jean Harper, assistant professor of English, has received the Goldfarb Family Fellowship for Non-Fiction Writers from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, located in Mt. San Angelo, Va. The fellowship was established by former board member Ronald Goldfarb, an author and literary agent.

Indiana University East will host the premiere of the documentary film, 1:47, on Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m. in Vivian Auditorium. The black tie optional event will start with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in Whitewater Lobby.
