NSM faculty collaborate to publish findings for use of phylogenic species identification
School of Natural Science and Mathematics faculty members Markus Pomper, Dale Beach and Mike Foos (emeritus); IU East B.S. in Biology graduate and former laboratory coordinator, Nickie May; and co-authors Don Ruch, from Ball State University, and Kathy Sheehan, from the University of Colorado, received notification that their paper, “Phylogeny of Pilobolaceae,” has been accepted for publication and will appear in an upcoming issue of Mycologia. This paper re-describes a family of fungi and proposes the use of phylogenic species identification to distinguish among isolates of the genus Pilobolus more accurately. This publication represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration utilizing the laboratory facilities at IU East.

There is always work for Mort Seddighin. A student calls to ask about a textbook for an online class. On his desk, there are dozens of papers laying nearby. 
He picks up a bundle of stapled papers between his pointer finger and thumb to show that even though classes have just started for the semester, he has work to do. “I have this stack of papers to referee for journals,” Seddighin said.

Indiana University East recognized several faculty and staff with awards for their service to the university during the Honors Convocation ceremony held April 15.

Mathematics Professor Publishes New Theory in Paper
A new mathematical theory titled, “Slant Antieigenvalue Theory” developed by Mort Seddighin, IU East professor of mathematics, and professor Karl Gustafson of the University of Colorado-Boulder, was presented in a lengthy paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Linear Algebra and Applications. LAA is one of the top referred international journals in mathematics published by Elsevier.

Mathematics professor invited to present at conference
Mort Seddighin, professor of mathematics, has been invited to present a talk during the 2009 Midwest Optimization Conference on Saturday, October 17, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
The presentation is “Some Techniques of Matrix Optimization.” Seddighin is using a lemma, which he discovered, to analytically solve the “Distribution of Search Effort” problem. This problem, which is among famous research allocation problems in operations research, has applications in the military.

Business dean chairs conference session
David W. Frantz, dean of the School of Business, served as chair of a session on “Critical Incidents in
Business Ethics,” and as a discussant in a session on “Business Cases in Business Development” at the Society for Case Research at the International MBAA conference held in Chicago from March 18-20.

ADA conferences being held at IU East
IU East is one of seven state-wide sites to host all 12 sessions of the ADA Audio conference this year. The conferences will be held the third Tuesday of each month in Whitewater Hall, room 119. The November Audio Conference, “Everything You Need to Know about the Enforcement of the ADA but Were Afraid to Ask,” will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18.

Several IU East faculty to present papers at International Lilly Conference
Indiana University East will have four of its faculty presenting their papers during the 28th International Lilly Conference on College Teaching to be held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The conference is scheduled for November 20-23, 2008.
