The Indiana University East Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won first place in its league during the SIFE United States Regional Competition Exposition held April 8 in Chicago.
IU East students on the team are James Healton of Centerville, Ind., Morgan Imhoff of Richmond, Ind., Cathleen Loy of Lewisburg, Ohio, Chelsy Ozbun of Lynn, Ind., and Blake Pieratt of Eaton, Ohio. Tim Scales, lecturer of business and director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, is the team’s advisor. The team has been working throughout the year on various projects related to teaching financial literacy concepts in the community.

David Frantz, dean of the IU East School of Business and Economics, represented IU East at the first meeting of the Council on Regional Engagement and Economic Development in Indianapolis, Friday, March 5. The Council, headed by Bill Stephan, Indiana University’s vice president for engagement, was formed to address how IU can bring its resources to bear to enhance statewide economic development.

Indiana University East and the Wayne County Foundation have partnered with the Indiana Business Research Center (IBRC) at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business to compile a report on community and economic benchmarks, which has just been completed and is now being released. The report compares the Richmond area to both a national and a statewide set of peers on a wide range of indicators, ranging from per capita personal income, to industry concentrations to area demographics.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels proclaimed today as BOSS Day. A proclamation by the governor’s office was read during the Entrepreneurship Business Opportunities for Self Starters (BOSS) program competition for high school students. Students presented their business plans in the competition. BOSS is a program in the Center for Entrepreneurship that provides high school students with the opportunity to build business knowledge, apply their research and to strengthen their networking opportunities.

Indiana University East is initiating a five-year plan to establish greater opportunities for collaboration with area businesses and organizations through the Business Development Opportunities Program. The initiative has been made possible by a $140,000 grant from Lilly Endowment , Inc., which is being matched by IU East.

The Indiana University East School of Business and Economics is offering a three-day leadership capacity-building series on May 20, June 3 and June 17. “Leading in Difficult Times – Coaching, Conflict, and Change” is a series that is focused on dealing with challenges in technological and human resources.

Business dean chairs conference session
David W. Frantz, dean of the School of Business, served as chair of a session on “Critical Incidents in
Business Ethics,” and as a discussant in a session on “Business Cases in Business Development” at the Society for Case Research at the International MBAA conference held in Chicago from March 18-20.

The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization at Indiana University East have developed a “Build-A-Rock” program on entrepreneurship and established a curriculum for high school educators. SIFE has taken the program into classrooms locally and nationwide, teaching young students about entrepreneurship. The organization plans to further the program by taking it internationally to classrooms around the globe.

RICHMOND, Ind. — Several area high school students involved in the Indiana University East Advancing Entrepreneurship Business Opportunities for Self Starters (BOSS) program participated in the regional competition Tuesday, June 24. The competition was held at the Richmond Civic Arts Center.
