IU East offers sixth graduate program: M.A.T. provides secondary, college instructors with master degree option

Indiana University East has received final approval for a new graduate degree program, a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics (M.A.T.), from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Applications for the program are now being accepted for admission to the summer or fall 2014 semesters.

IU East announces new dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Indiana University East has appointed Neil Sabine as the Dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics, effective May 1, 2013. Sabine has served the campus as the interim dean since August 2011, in addition to teaching as an associate professor of biology.

IU East welcomes new faculty to the School of Natural Science and Mathematics

Indiana University East is pleased to welcome its newest faculty in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. Two new faculty began at the start of the fall 2012 semester.

Yu Kay Law, assistant professor of chemistry, received his Doctorate in Biophysics from Ohio State University where he was also a Graduate Fellow. He earned his Master of Arts and Master of Science in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

IU East to add three new online degree programs

Indiana University East will soon add three new baccalaureate programs to its online degree completion portfolio. The degree programs bring a total of 10 available options for students who wish to complete their bachelor’s degree online.

School of Natural Science and Mathematics adding human biology, biochemistry degrees

Wednesday, October 27th

The Indiana University East School of Natural Science and Mathematics is seeking approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education for two new degree programs.

The Bachelor of Science in Human Life Science and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree programs received prior approval from the Indiana University Board of Trustees during its October 1 meeting. Both degrees could begin in fall 2011 pending approval from the commission.

IU East to offer mathematics degree online

Tuesday, September 14th

Indiana University East is now offering an online degree completion program for a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics.

Currently, three bachelor degree completion programs are offered online including Business Administration, Communication Studies, and English-Technical and Professional Writing.

NSM faculty collaborate to publish findings for use of phylogenic species identification
School of Natural Science and Mathematics faculty members Markus Pomper, Dale Beach and Mike Foos (emeritus); IU East B.S. in Biology graduate and former laboratory coordinator, Nickie May; and co-authors Don Ruch, from Ball State University, and Kathy Sheehan, from the University of Colorado, received notification that their paper, “Phylogeny of Pilobolaceae,” has been accepted for publication and will appear in an upcoming issue of Mycologia. This paper re-describes a family of fungi and proposes the use of phylogenic species identification to distinguish among isolates of the genus Pilobolus more accurately. This publication represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration utilizing the laboratory facilities at IU East.

Mathematician’s research is known worldwide

There is always work for Mort Seddighin. A student calls to ask about a textbook for an online class. On his desk, there are dozens of papers laying nearby.

He picks up a bundle of stapled papers between his pointer finger and thumb to show that even though classes have just started for the semester, he has work to do.  “I have this stack of papers to referee for journals,” Seddighin said.

Mathematics professor invited to present at conference
Mort Seddighin, professor of mathematics, has been invited to present a talk during the 2009 Midwest Optimization Conference on Saturday, October 17, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
The presentation is “Some Techniques of Matrix Optimization.” Seddighin is using a lemma, which he discovered, to analytically solve the “Distribution of Search Effort” problem. This problem, which is among famous research allocation problems in operations research, has applications in the military.

Several IU East faculty to present papers at International Lilly Conference
Indiana University East will have four of its faculty presenting their papers during the 28th International Lilly Conference on College Teaching to be held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The conference is scheduled for November 20-23, 2008.
