IU East’s Homecoming 2011 begins Saturday with KIAC volleyball tournament

November 9, 2011 |

Indiana University East will celebrate “Homecoming 2011: Wild Night” the week of November 12-18. The campus is celebrating its 40th anniversary this fall, and Homecoming features several events that have an early 1970s influence. The theme is based on the song written and released by Van Morrison in 1971 and more recently covered by John Mellancamp.

Homecoming events are sponsored by the Alumni Association, Office of Campus Life, Student Activities Advisory Team, Student Government Association, and Students Today Alumni Tomorrow.

The 28th ranked volleyball team (34-8) will kick off homecoming week Saturday with the semifinal and final rounds of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center. The tournament host Red Wolves are on the hunt for their third consecutive KIAC Tournament championship.

The KIAC volleyball semifinals are at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 12. The championship match is at 5 p.m. that day.

Following the championship match, students are invited to attend the Homecoming Dance beginning at 9 p.m. in the Graf Center. The Homecoming Court will be announced at the dance.

Monday Madness is November 14 at 1 p.m. in the Graf Center. Students will pick up their Homecoming t-shirts and enjoy an afternoon of music, food, and a variety of activities inside and outside the Graf Center.

The IU East Alumni Association and the IU East School of Business and Economics are hosting the Indiana University 2012 Business Outlook Panel on Tuesday, November 15. The luncheon and panel discussion will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lingle Grand Hall, Reid Hospital & Health Care Services. Reid Hospital is sponsoring the event.

The third annual Nearly Naked Mile will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, outside of Springwood Hall. Sponsored by the IU East Alumni Association, the student event raises donations for those in need, so a registration “fee” of one or more gently used items of clothing (such as coats, hats, or gloves) is required. Participants must be clothed in at least what a bathing suit would cover. Costumes are welcome. Students participating receive a free Nearly Naked Mile beanie cap for the first 200 registrants. Prizes will be awarded for top Male and Female Finisher and also Best Costume.

Later that night, “The Beatles: A Rock and Roll Lecture” by Glenn Gass, professor of music at Indiana University, will be free and open to the public. The lecture is at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall. Gass developed a series of courses on the history of rock and popular music, including general historical surveys and courses devoted exclusively to the Music of the Beatles and the Music of Bob Dylan.

The Homecoming Bonfire will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, behind Hayes Hall.

Homecoming events will culminate on Friday, November 18, with the Red Wolves home basketball game at 7 p.m. versus Ohio State-Mansfield at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center. IU East will wear retro uniforms for the game. During the game’s halftime, IU East will celebrate Rufus the Red Wolf’s birthday and crown the Homecoming King and Queen. An Alumni Postgame Party will be held following the game.
