Indiana University East has dramatically increased its first summer session enrollment, with a 30 percent increase in credit hours and the number of students enrolled compared to the same time last year, according to unofficial enrollment figures. Enrollment figures are not official until approved by the President of Indiana University.

“This is remarkable growth,” Chancellor Nasser Paydar said. “Our campus is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, and we anticipate continued growth as we deliver relevant, high-quality programs in an efficient and affordable manner.”

IU East is continuing to register students for the Summer II Session courses beginning July 6. Summer I Session began May 18.

The faculty are instructing 4,851 credit hours compared to 3,694 credit hours being taught this same time last year – an increase of 31.3 percent.

IU East has 925 students enrolled for the summer session to date, compared to 697 students this time last year, for an increase of 32.7 percent compared to the first summer session in 2008.

The significant increase in summer enrollment follows record enrollment figures at IU East for the fall and spring semesters during the past year.

Paydar said that the campus has planned for this growth as part of its transition to a traditional bachelor’s and master’s degree institution.

“This continued growth is critical to our region’s future,” Paydar said. “We have changed our mission so that we can make a bigger difference in this region. In an information- and knowledge-based economy, our region needs more bachelor’s degree graduates.”

IU East has hired several new faculty to instruct the growing number of students taking courses in the more than 50 academic programs offered at the university. In April, the campus initiated a new four-year degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Informatics, to provide students the necessary knowledge and skills for careers in informatics – the art, science and human dimensions of information technology. The Master of Social Work was added in early 2008, expanding the graduate program offerings at the campus.
