Indiana University East’s continued growth has resulted in another semester of record-breaking enrollment. Student enrollment (3,365) has increased by 15.1 percent this fall semester, while student credit hours (33,411.5) increased 15.5 percent over last fall.  Both figures are new record highs for the campus, breaking marks set last fall.

This fall’s growth in enrollment and credit hours taken is once again the largest among all IU campuses.

Since 2006, IU East enrollment has increased dramatically with a 50 percent increase in number of students and a 54 percent increase in credit hours.

“After 35 years, the campus enrolled 2,000-plus students,” said Chancellor Nasser Paydar.  “In the last four years, we have added over 1,000 more.”

This year’s bachelor’s degree seeking class of new students (708) is also the largest in campus history.  Teenagers comprise 91.3 percent of the new freshman class.  Average SAT and ACT scores of incoming freshmen also increased.

“This incredible growth has occurred at the same time that we have raised our admission standards,” said Paydar.  “We have become the university of choice for students from this region, and it’s a reflection of our new mission as a bachelor’s and master’s institution and our high-quality academic programs.”

The number of new transfer students increased 16.4 percent, including a 44.8 percent increase in new transfers from Ivy Tech Community College.

“It’s imperative that we grow,” said Paydar.  “We need to increase the educational attainment in eastern Indiana and western Ohio.  These students represent our future human resources and the region’s future economic opportunities.”
