Red Wolves mascot receives name

Indiana University East has a name for the Red Wolves mascot. “Rufus the Red Wolf” debuted in person during the IU East/Holiday Inn Richmond Homecoming Classic basketball tournament held in November. After seeking nominations from the community for a name, the university received 162 suggestions.

Rufus derives from Canis rufus, the scientific name for red wolf.

The name was suggested separately by six individuals: Faith Aller, Diana Fahl, Bob McDaniel, Tommy Renfro, Alisha Sintz and Terry Wiesehan. The name was announced during the IU East men’s basketball game versus Brescia College held January 3.

A drawing was held during the half-time to determine which of the individuals would receive the $100 Red Wolves prize package to the IU East Campus Bookstore for team apparel. The winner was Sintz, a student at IU East, but the others didn’t leave empty handed. They received a Red Wolves sweatshirt in appreciation for their participation.

Organizations may schedule the Red Wolves mascot for an event or function by contacting the Office of Campus Life at (765) 973-8240.
