Women’s Basketball: Free Throw-athon nets widespread support
The Indiana University East women’s basketball program teamed up with a familiar opponent to make a difference in the fight against women’s cancers.
The second IU East women’s basketball Free Throw-athon took place on Lingle Court following the Red Wolves’ home game against WVU Tech on Feb. 14.
The IU East and WVU Tech teams returned to the court after the Red Wolves’ 90-87 win and teamed up to make 81 out of 100 free throws, with sponsor donations based on free throws made.
“It’s special that we can share this event with them after such a tough battle today,” said IU East’s Addie Brown. “We asked them if they wanted to be a part of this, and they were up for it, and it’s cool they are in their pink gear, too.”
The Free Throw-athon supported Reid BRAvo! BRAvo! is a Reid Foundation initiative that brings awareness to the serious matter of breast cancer. BRAvo! events raise funds to provide free digital mammograms for uninsured women and financial assistance for patients in need.
Official contributions to the Free Throw-athon totaled $1,931 as of the evening of Feb. 14.
“This Free Throw-athon means all the more to us because (women’s cancers) have affected so many of us personally,” Brown said. “The fact we get to support people on our team whose families have been affected is really special, and we’re glad to be a part of this event.”
