Current Teaching and Creative Interests
The current use of instant communication in text messages, online meetings, and social networking sites
in a variety of professional settings; working with colleagues to apply current research about instant
communication in the professional world to the first year composition classroom; producing a nonfiction
text about a variety of professionals’ instant communication experiences.
Selected Service and Accomplishments
- Served on the IU East First Year Seminar committee, 2008 – present; helped launch a new IUE First Year
Seminar program in 2009; continue to collaborate with other FYS committee members and faculty to
adjust the FYS program, promote retention, and increase 4 year graduation rates.
- As a result of my use of Walls’ The Glass Castle in Elementary Composition courses (November 2006-
2007), I worked with Learning Community faculty, English faculty, and students to invite her to campus,
gain funding, and organize three very successful campus and community events around her visit.
- Member and co-chair of the Commission on the Status of Women, IU East, 2000 – 2005; helped organize
several annual IUE Women’s conferences including the March 2003 IU East Women’s Conference
featuring Gloria Steinem and Sandra Leek.
