Math Lab

All students enrolled in a math class at IU East are welcome and encouraged to use the Math Lab located in Springwood Hall 202C. All Math Lab services are free to students and are designed to help them succeed academically and gain confidence in math.

Students may come to the Math Lab as often as they like. Two tutors are available at all scheduled times to:

  • Help prepare students for quizzes and exams
  • Share math tips and study strategies
  • Help students gain self-confidence
  • Show students another way of looking at the problems and offer alternate explanations

Students can also get a head start on their education by attending Math JUMPSTART sessions.

Hours

The Math Lab is open the following hours during the Fall and Spring semesters:

  • Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. AND Friday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Math Hotline

Stuck on a particular problem or need help with a concept? Students are invited to call the math hotline (765-973-8432 or 1-800-959-3278, extension 432) any time during scheduled Math Lab hours.

Math Lab Features

The Math Lab uses many tools to help students learn, including:

  • Practice Quizzes and Exams—Practice quizzes and exams are available to help students prepare for actual course work. The tutor and the student can then review the problems so the student can see where and why mistakes were made. Try some practice quizzes and exams.
  • Videos—Students can watch instructional videos in the Math Lab or check them out for up to one week. The videos explain key concepts and show how to work problems. Videos are indexed according to sections in the M007 and M117 texts so that tutors can help students select the most appropriate video.
  • Computer-Assisted Math Programs—Computer-assisted math programs help students learn a new concept or review a familiar one. Math tutors explain how to use the software in a few minutes, and then students are off to explore the step-by-step tutorials on their own.
  • Worksheets and Texts—The Math Lab contains dozens of handouts and worksheets indexed according to textbook sections. Many handouts give step-by-step instructions for solving a particular type of problem as well as examples and practice problems. Students are welcome to review a handout with a math tutor and then take the handout home for future reference. In addition, the Math Lab contains many alternative texts for student use.
  • Workshops and Review Sessions—During the semester, math tutors conduct various workshops covering topics such as word problems and factoring. Tutors also conduct review sessions prior to exams. Students can bring their practice exams to the session and review problems with their classmates.
