Music Capitals of Europe: Venice & Vienna
May 24 2009 - June 7 2009
This course will take place entirely in Europe and involve visits to two important centers of music, Venice and Vienna, as part of a broad- based culture and non-linear music history course.
We will begin in the Piedmont region of Italy, in the town of Alba, at the St Mary’s College of Maryland Italian study center. The visit to Alba will coincide with the last week of the 2010 Alba International Music Festival. After several days of preparation and coursework, which will include concerts and lectures as part of the festival, we will travel to Venice for three days and Vienna for four. In each city we will attend concerts, visit museums and important historical sites, and visit important musical sites relevant to the course. Such sites will include composer residences, graves, and other monuments. Topics will include both specific and broad historical and musical aspects of each composer studied along with the associated musical period, wrapped within the context of European and world history.

There are no prerequisites in term of specific courses, however students should posses a minimum GPA of 2.75.
