Preparing for Interviews Pt. 1

04/08/2010

Preparing for an interview takes a little more effort than you think. Before you even realize it you are worried about what you are going to wear, how you are going to calm your jitters, what you will say to the "oh so many" questions they will ask you and more importantly, you need to know that there are so many more things that you also need to work on. The internship workshop can help you out with many of your fears so going to the Career Planning and Placement Office should be one of your first steps to achieving your goal. Everyone is welcome to stop in and get help on anything they may need to find a job, the service is for you and everyone should take advantage of it. I am very glad I had to opportunity to participate in the program. One of the aspects of career planning is interviews. A resume by itself will not get you a job, it only gets you an interview. So you have worked on your resume for four hours and now I am telling you that it won't get you the job? Well, kind of, it may get you an interview but it will not do the work for you so after that you are on your own. Make sure to take at least two copies of your resume and references to any interview you attend. So please take the extra time and print out your resume. Be sure to pick up resume paper from Meijer, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Office Max, many major retailers should carry them and they are relatively under ten dollars for a pack. Resume paper will make your resume professional, elegant, and stand out among the others printed in regular printed paper trust me- if you get the job it will be worth it. Try to spare a nice clean and crisp folder, I use manila folders, but you can use any folder of your liking as long as it is professional... please do not use your Jonas Brothers folder and if you choose a three ring binder, refrain from hole punching your resume. One great tool to help you build a cover letter, resume, and prepare you for an interview is this job search guide (will prompt to log in using your Indiana University user Id and pass-phrase). This is a very helpful tool especially for me because I was able to print it out at school and insert it into a three ring binder for my personal use to prepare me for my interviews and help ease the process of writing a cover letter, resume, and calm my jitters. After you are fully prepared for your interview be sure to dress appropriately <see example below>, flip flops are not appropriate and you should try to find a nice pair of slacks, even if you have to borrow yours brothers! Unless you are applying at Hooters do not wear jeans, tank tops, shorts, or anything too revealing because they are not appropriate for any job interview. Thank you for reading- I enjoy being able to help anyone out with whatever they may need please do not hesitate to ask!
