It's been awhile.... and I am tired!!!

09/10/2009

Hi everyone!!! I really hope that everyone’s Fall 09 semester is going great and that we are all off to a great start. Honestly I can’t believe that we are about to walk into week three that means midterms will be here before we all know it and then those dreaded finals will be just around the corner. I had to set a reminder for myself that I need to call and schedule a time to go and take the Praxis or I am not going to be able to take Education Methods in the Spring and I will be behind for graduation. I love IU East I have been having a great time here but I am also ready to graduate and move onto another chapter in my life. I hope everyone is doing great with your classes and not getting too overwhelmed. My semester has started off pretty well, I really enjoy all my classes, these are my last classes before I begin taking Methods so I am very excited about that. I know several people in all my classes and I have a pretty great schedule, I only go to school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday I am in Connersville which is where I am from so that is nice I don’t have to travel to Richmond as much, with gas prices as high as they are its really helpful not to have to travel to Richmond everyday. I also bought a new computer this week, I bought an HP laptop, Black and Silver its very awesome. I have a lot of features that come with my web cam, I can change the frames, I can have an avatar, my favorite one is Abraham Lincoln . I also have a feature called Distortion and it is basically just a bunch of distortions its really funny!

Oh I want to remind everyone, if you are in need a quick dose of caffine, go over to bear creek café and order a coffee. My favorite is the White Mocha w/Peppermint, it tastes so good. They are also serving food over there, so you can have lunch or just a snack it’s all at Bear Creek Café. They really do have great coffee!

I promised ya’ll that I would try to get a couple of tips put up here to help you survive a semester at college. This is more geared to those who are in their first semester here at IUE so I have put together a few tips for everyone.

Tips for surviving your college experience

  1. Set goals for yourself and this semester.
What do you want to accomplish this semester? Is something as simple as make it to all your classes on time, or do you want to make it on the Chancellors List for this Fall? Whatever your goal may be write it down somewhere you will see it and keep to it.
  2. Go to class!!!
I know this may sound simple but, I have seen too many times someone just doesn’t feel like coming to class or they feel that they are falling behind too much and they just quit coming to class. Don’t just skip class because you don’t feel like it, if you are sick that is different stay home, there is no need to come when you’re sick and risk infecting your other classmates and professors. But if your capable of coming to class, GO TO CLASS!! If you have an assignment due in class and you’re not quite finished with it, Go to class anyways most instructors are understanding, you may lose a couple points but at least you won’t be behind in the lesson.
  3. Read Read Read!!!!
Read the assigned reading, I know it may seem like a lot of reading sometimes but read the assigned chapters, this will help you on Exams, homework, and you will understand the lesson for the next class time. Also sometimes instructors like to give quizzes on based on the reading so read. You pay all that money for your books get your money’s worth.
  4. Relax!!!
For many students, this is your first time back in school after a few years, I know it can be overwhelming, to have a job and school work and maybe you have children at home so it is easy to get stressed and overwhelmed especially with deadlines and papers, but don’t let it stress you out. You don’t want to look back after your finished and just remember stressfullness and unhappiness. Have fun with your time here, a little stress it good, it keeps us motivated but don’t stress to much.
  5. Participate, Participate, Participate!
If the instructor asks a question or asks for discussion, get involved. Instructors like participation from their students they don’t like to just stand up and lecture you, they want that back and forth dialogue, plus many instructors give points based on participation and that could mean the difference between one grade and another.
