I Love IUE

10/20/2014

Going into Spirit of Philanthropy Week at IUE I thought I would post about the things I love about my school!

1. I love that IUE has a cadet program and that IU is the ONLY university to have a police academy for it's students.

2. I love Wazir Mohamed, a sociology professor on campus. I took his intro course in sociology and the class was so good I picked up sociology as my minor. (And I'm considering studying sociology in graduate school).

2. Sociology Club. The Sociology Club is a recent addition to the clubs on campus. I will be attending the Diversity Leadership Conference at IU Bloomington with the club! This is a wonderful opportunity and I look forward to the experience!

3. Criminal Justice Club. I have been working with Professor Whitehead and Professor Clamme in reorganizing the club. We have our first meeting on Tuesday the 28th at 2 p.m. There are about 50 members and we will be electing officers soon. The club will also be going on a tour of the Sheriffs Department in a few weeks.

4. SI. Supplemental Instruction has helped me succeed in many of my classes. If you don't know what SI is I will take a few seconds to explain. SI is for introductory college courses. Students who have completed the class with an A and who have been recommended by the professor are SI Leaders. These leaders put together study activities that help you review your course material.   Students who attend SI are going to get a letter grade higher than if they weren't to attend SI. I am an SI leader for biology and I love it!

5. Campus Life. Campus Life puts a lot of time and effort into putting on exciting and fun events for the student body. One of my favorites was the A Capella group called Six Appeal.

6. I love being an Admissions Ambassador! I have had a wonderful time meeting potential students through admissions events and tours.

7. Extreme Jumpstart. This is a program I was able to help with this summer and it was so much fun. This is a program put together by Academic Support Programs. Extreme Jumpstart is for incoming students and takes place the week before classes start. Students meet one another, learn study strategies and are taken on a tour of their class schedule, just to name a few.

8. Small Class Sizes. I am able to interact with all of my classmates and form lasting relationships with them. My professors also know me by name. This is very helpful when applying for graduate school... professors can't give you letters of recommendation if they don't know you.

9. The Math and Science Center. This is a free resource for all IUE students. There are multiple students who are fantastic at mathematics and different facets of science ready to help you. The only reason I got an A in both of my math classes is because of the knowledgeable tutors.

10. The Library. When you are doing research you need to go to the library. If you can't find it there are people who are there to help you. Last week I was struggling finding articles related to the prevention of human trafficking and Matt Dilworth, a Coordinator of Reference and Media Services, helped me find the research I had been looking for.

11. The gym. Free gym membership comes in handy for a college student!

12. Professors. The professors on campus are friendly and approachable! Professors will know you by name. I had an environmental science course and the professor invited all his students to come out to his property and explore the different trees and insects first hand.

I LOVE IUE! This is the college for me :)
