You Live and You Learn

10/8/2014

We all go to college for mostly the same reason, to learn about something to get a decent job. How boring! We all sit in class full of useful tips of the trade to only find ourselves four years later starting in a job we truly aren't prepared entirely for, yet we are prepared enough for. College is said to help you get a degree, however college is much more than just the accounting equation and rolling backpacks.

I know I've posted about the things you need to know in college already but these are the things you learn in college! Although I've only been in school a year I have learned so much. Between the many mugs of coffee and the endless amount of let downs I can honestly say I've learned some great things in just a year, and the best part is I'm only getting started!

First thing I learned right off the bat was to be organized and be on time. These are two things that will keep your head straight for many years to come. Like I've mentioned coffee is liquid gold, drink that stuff up until you find yourself drinking black coffee to get through the days. Everyone has their own path at school, it’s up to them to take it. Rolling backpacks were cool in first grade, not college (endless you have a back problem then two strap that thing!) College is more than sweatpants and Ugg Boots. A sad but true statement, how you dress says a lot about you, think about that next time. People can be weird, mean, and sweet. You'll find all of those qualities in people probably on your first day of class, good luck. Find the people whose love for something is deeper than the sea. There is nothing I enjoy more than listening to two of my favorite basketball players here discuss basketball, the love behind their voices is almost like their talking about a loved one. People watching is acceptable, at all times and anywhere. Small schools equal bigger possibilities. If you are the only person pushing yourself to be the best, push harder. Being at the top of your game means it’s farther to fall. Don't shake your pedestal or your crown. Love what you do, do what you love. Freshman fifteen is a joke is you're smart about it (drink more water and less beer). Don't let anyone steal your sunshine, they're just rain cloud looking for trouble. Invest in a good winter coat, hat, and umbrella. Enjoy the holidays with the people you love, whether that be a girlfriend/boyfriend, a basketball team, or your family. Love hard, but not quick. Use your head often, and your heart when you can. Heartbreak hurts, but get up and move on. One stressful day will is only one stressful day don't let it eat you up. Everyone is different. Make tons of mistakes! And by tons I mean cattle loads of tons. Except who you are. Change for the better and never for the worse. Change when change is needed, like when partying takes over your life. Always be smart when it comes to anything! (Wrap it before you tap it!) Enjoy the people surrounding you. Find one great professor who no matter how crazy they think you are will support your crazy self. Eat what makes you happy, drink what makes you healthy. Puppies and kitties are the best stress relievers, go to the help shelter and pet the heck out of those guys! This is the only time in your life were you can make something of yourself and when you’re done all of it goes away, go big or go home. TAKE ALL THINGS FREE! Get the coolest backpack (that doesn't roll..) and love the goodness out of it! Enjoy your campus, and all the mud surrounding it. Put your health first. Enjoy the people who you can call mom and dad even if they're only a year older than you. Love your old friends, embrace your new friends. Even that person whose guts you should hate so much can be the best friend you'll ever have. Open up sometimes! Dream big. Love sweet tea, or not. Anything is possible if you get off your butt and do it. Don’t waste your time on someone who’s not wasting time on you. Then that would mean your one their mind and that’s pretty cute. You may or may not find your soul mate in college, don’t search too hard and don’t go after your Mrs. Degree. People want to watch you fall, give them the best show you can to show you won’t fall. Everyone is an actor, either you are on no stage or Broadway. You’ll live. Stand for what you believe. Always have someone cover for you, in all situations. Don’t worry about getting a job. Even the dumbest of people can get jobs, like as an Abercrombie Model… You are not better than IUE. College is more than just parties, acting cool, and athletics. If you want that go to the bowling alley on Saturdays. Have the best experience you can at the end of every day. STUDY HARD, PLAY HARD!

So those are some of the things I’ve learned in my first year of college. There are a lot more however they are my learning experiences, so I plan on keeping them. Go out and learn every day something new about yourself, your school, or just the world. There is a lot to learn!

So I ask you to think very very hard of your favorite college memory. If it’s a really good memory please share it with me! I’d love to know! And in return I’ll share one oh my favorite memories so far.

Carpe Diem!
