On October 16th, IU East will host Robert Jensen, a famous journalism professor from the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Jensen will explore race issues in his speech “Power and Politics in the Age of Obama: Is the United States Post-Racial?” Although Dr. Jensen will be discussing racism, he is a significant voice on many other topics ranging from white privilege, feminism (especially as relates to pornography, sexual violence, and the social construction of masculinity), America’s place in the world (particularly its military actions), journalism, and the furthering of progressive political goals through the use of media.  He has published dozens of scholarly articles, books, newspaper columns, blogs, and more detailing his thoughts on these issues. This year, the IU East community is reading Wine to Water for the One Book, Many Voices program (we have several copies at the library available for checkout – ask at the front desk).  It is the story of Doc Hendley, a North Carolina bartender who decided to go to Darfur to help the people get access to clean water.  There, he repaired broken wells, had water trucked to refugee camps, distributed chlorine tablets for purifying contaminated water, and more, all while navigating the war and ethnic cleansing between the Janjaweed and the Sudanese Liberation Army in one of the most dangerous places in the world. World Book Night … spreading the love of reading, person to person

Think about a book you read recently that you enjoyed.  As simple as that…reading a book that gives you enjoyment.  Now think about people who know how to read, but do not. Perhaps they got out of the habit, or never developed the habit of reading for pleasure, or don’t have access, or any number of other reasons.  Now, YOU have an opportunity to change that. Northeastern Elementary School is one of the many community partners working with the Center for Service-Learning.  IU East students placed at Northeastern Elementary get on-the-job experience working with children in an education environment while at the same time providing valued mentor relationships for youth.   CSL currently has students assisting in classrooms and tutoring during the Homework Heroes after-school program.  In the Spring, IU East science and education students will have the opportunity to help with Northeastern’s science fair. Volunteer opportunities are open to all IU East students! Elementary education major Kati Felix is one of the students who tutored in the Homework Heroes program this semester.  She worked with three students for an hour each week.  Kati reflected, “This experience … Continued
