Reading is essential for learning, and reading success in third grade creates a strong foundation for building future knowledge. The Children’s Reading Foundation “encourages school districts and communities to adopt a 90 percent reading goal. This goal means 90 percent of third graders will read on or above grade level by the end of the school year. By adopting this goal, illiteracy can be eliminated.”  Locally, the Every Child Can Read (ECCR) organization, in partnership with the Richmond Community Schools and community supporters, provides a summer reading program that serves more than 150 students who benefit from added reading instruction and literacy enrichment. Connecting with children to create a culture of college

Promise Indiana is a program that “helps families and communities to support youth through saving for future education, participating in college and career activities in the classroom, and experiencing a college campus.” As an active participant in the program, Randolph County Schools provides students with experiences that help them visualize a future that includes education after high school graduation. This year IU East welcomed more than 200 third grade students to explore the campus.  More than 30 faculty, staff and college students, along with more than a dozen campus volunteers, facilitated 52 interactive learning sessions with content ranging from anatomy and accounting to teamwork and solving mysteries. In January, Family READ celebrates creativity. We Read. Explore. Ask. Discover! creativity through the arts and also with innovative thinking. READ is an initiative of the IU East Campus Library. We encourage families to read, explore, ask and discover together and we have curated a resource guide featuring recommended books and learning activities. The Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council provided funding support to purchase interesting and engaging non-fiction books for youth. As the IU East R.E.A.D. (Read. Explore. Ask. Discover!) program continues through November, we highlight awareness and advocacy for women in technology, Native Americans, and careers in science, technology, math, and art. We share inspiring stories in memoirs and explore a diversity of role models and mentors. An online resource guide includes book descriptions, learning links, and activity ideas. With generous funding support from the Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Circle we have been able to purchase non-fiction books for youth that introduce us to new people, places and ideas. More than 300 non-fiction youth books are being added to the IU East Campus Library collection, thanks to the generosity of the Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council. The Family R.E.A.D. program is designed to Read, Explore, Ask, and Discover a variety of ideas, perspectives and content available through a wide range of books. Saturday, September 14, from 10-11:30 a.m. at the IU East Campus Library, families can participate in discovery centers that feature the themes of going to college, healthy eating and fitness, and Hispanic Heritage. IU East students, faculty and staff will be hosting fun learning stations that include games, dancing, food, crafts and more.
