Throughout the month of June, the IU East Campus Library hosted afternoon programming for Richmond’s Reading Academy, a full day of classes focused on reading and writing over a 4 week period. An initiative of Every Child Can Read, Inc., the Reading Academy is a program that works to ensure that every child can read at reading level by the third grade. To provide creative academic enrichment, the Campus Library team, with IU East student, staff, and faculty volunteers, planned and implemented a variety of programming activities, such as weaving, riddle creation, nature journaling, science experiments, and yoga. Celebrating Reading: The Reading Academy at IU East

Reading is essential for learning, and reading success in third grade creates a strong foundation for building future knowledge. The Children’s Reading Foundation “encourages school districts and communities to adopt a 90 percent reading goal. This goal means 90 percent of third graders will read on or above grade level by the end of the school year. By adopting this goal, illiteracy can be eliminated.”  Locally, the Every Child Can Read (ECCR) organization, in partnership with the Richmond Community Schools and community supporters, provides a summer reading program that serves more than 150 students who benefit from added reading instruction and literacy enrichment. Third Grade Academy: Class of 2031!

“Ticket to Reading Adventures” was the theme of Third Grade Academy 2018 and we certainly enjoyed an array of learning experiences! Mornings focused on reading, and afternoons included special activities presented by IU East faculty, staff and students. We have enjoyed welcoming third graders to campus for more than ten years, with the Campus Library hosting classes each year since 2010. Third Grade Academy + IU East = learning success!

Since 2010, the IU East Campus Library has been involved with Third Grade Academy, providing reading adventures and learning activities. In 2014 we became the campus host site and since then have enjoyed a month of young learners in the library each summer. We can always count on support provided by the talented and giving IU East staff, faculty and students and TGA 2017 has proven to be a particularly lively and engaging learning extravaganza. The eighteen third graders have experienced a variety of activities and interactions that teach them new content but also can help them feel comfortable within the college environment. Indiana University Class of 2030 has arrived!

  Yes, you read correctly. Students currently in 3rd grade who stay on track through high school and attending IU East, will graduate college in 2030. IU East is again, for the 8th summer, hosting Third Grade Academy. This program helps students become stronger readers and prepares them for academic success. We are a program site for two classes meeting daily throughout June, with a total of 20 children.    In addition to enhancing their reading skills, TGA students interact with college students, faculty and staff for a variety of fun activities.
