Creative writing alum Steph Cash Beckner (BA, English, 2016; MA, English, 2019) was a finalist for the 2020 Iowa Review Award in nonfiction. This contest was judged by novelist and essays Leslie Jamison. Steph Cash Beckner is currently an MFA candidate in nonfiction at University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
Creative Writing Minor Olivia Ryckman was invited to read a selection of her poems at the 2020 Sigma Tau Delta conference in Las Vegas, an event that was, unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Olivia’s presentation “Judgement Day: A Walking Dead Poetry Collection” won third place in the Oral Presentation category at IU East’s 2020 Student Research Day. A second presentation titled “‘Everything Is Waiting for You’: The Importance of the Short Story Cycle” was accepted at Johns Hopkins University’s inaugural Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium.
Four poems by Heidi Klein currently appear in the 2020 issue of Tributaries, A Journal of Creative Arts. One of these poems, “Decoy Shoes,” was the Honorable Mention in the Tributaries 2020 Poetry Contest, judged by novelist Jessica Anthony, IU East’s Visiting Writer in Fall 2020. Heidi’s reading of these and other poems also received a prize at IU East’s Student Research Day this year. She was featured in IU East’s virtual Celebration of Student Writing in April 2020 with a reading of a new poem, “Purge Burning.” Heidi was also selected to be a 2020 Summer Research Scholar (SUMRS) for her project entitled “Decoy Shoes,” a chapbook of poetry to be completed under the supervision of Dr. Brian Brodeur.
