Graduate level certification in Special Education

This certification can be taken on its own for existing teachers to add Special Education to their existing teaching license, or as part of the M.S. in Education program, whether pursuing licensure in this area or not. If a teacher desires to add this area to their existing license, there is an additional practicum and the required licensure tests at the state level.

Courses include the following topics as well as opportunities to pursue individual interests in the field of Special Education:

  • Foundations and breadth of Special Education services
  • Teaching methods in Special Education
  • Etiology of and specific means for addressing the needs of learners with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, and mild and moderate intellectual disabilities
  • Assistive technology
  • Co-teaching approaches
  • Social justice orientations in Special Education

Additional courses allow adding to existing teaching license. Elementary and secondary teachers are required to take an course focused on introduction to special education if they do not have this on their existing transcript.  These courses are not counted as part of the minor.
